Introduction to Wuhan University of Technology
Wuhan University of Technology (武汉理工大学, hereafter referred to as WUT, website) is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, the first batch of universities included in the national “211 project” and “double first-class” construction, is the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Transport and other ministries and commissions to build a university. The history of the university is originated from the Hubei Craft College established in 1898, 123 years of operation, especially in the past 70 years, the university has trained more than 600,000 senior professionals, and is the largest university directly under the Ministry of Education to train talents for the three major industries of building materials, construction, transportation and automobile. It has become an important base for cultivating high-level talents and scientific and technological innovation in the “three major industries” of China. At present, there are more than 36,000 undergraduates, more than 18,000 doctoral and master’s students and more than 1,700 international students in the university.
Through long-term cultivation practice, the university has formed a distinctive ideological system: the university ideal of “building an excellent university that satisfies the people and is admired by the world” has been constructed, the university spirit of “virtue and erudition, pursuit of excellence” has been forged, and the university spirit of “cultivating people and academic excellence” has been established. The university has Mafang Mountain Campus, Yujiatou Campus and Nanhu Campus, covering an area of more than 4,000 mu, with a total building area of 1,861,000 square meters and 4 modern libraries with 3,295,300 books. There are 25 colleges (departments) and 6 independently established research institutes. There are 5,419 faculty members, including 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of Royal Belgian Academy of Sciences, 1 academician of Australian Academy of Engineering, 3 academicians of European Academy of Sciences, 1 foreign academician of Russian Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of World Academy of Ceramics; 125 talents supported by the Ministry of Organization, Ministry of Science and Technology, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Education and Hubei Provincial Government Talent Program. 125 high-level talents.
The university has formed a system of disciplines and majors with engineering as the main discipline, and science, engineering, economics, management, art, literature and law as interpenetrating and coordinated development. There are 19 authorization points of first-level disciplines for doctoral degree, 45 authorization points of first-level disciplines for master’s degree, 17 postdoctoral research stations, 22 authorization categories of master’s professional degrees and 39 authorization fields of master’s professional degrees. In the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, Materials Science and Engineering was awarded A+, and Mechanical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Design and Marxist Theory were awarded B+. There are 96 undergraduate majors, including 37 national first-class undergraduate majors, 15 national specialty majors, 28 pilot majors of the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, 4 national pilot majors of comprehensive reform, and 2 national majors of strategic emerging industries. There are 40 national first-class undergraduate courses, 17 national high-quality resource sharing courses and 8 national high-quality video open courses. There are 5 national teaching teams, 4 experimental zones of talent cultivation mode of the Ministry of Education, 5 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 13 national engineering practice education centers, 1 internationalization demonstration college, 1 national innovation and entrepreneurship base and 1 national entrepreneurship incubation demonstration base for practice education in colleges and universities.
In the past 10 years, the university has cultivated a number of national outstanding college students’ representatives, one of whom was awarded the “National Most Beautiful College Student”, two of whom were awarded the “Chinese Youth May Fourth Medal”, four of whom were awarded the “Chinese College Student of the Year”. 4 were awarded the title of “Chinese Students’ Person of the Year”, 4 were awarded the title of “Chinese Students’ Self-improvement Star Pioneer”, 15 were awarded the title of “Chinese Students’ Self-improvement Star”, 5 were awarded the “Chinese Youth Volunteers’ Outstanding Individual Award “Five students were awarded the “China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award”. The employment rate of graduates has been maintained at over 95% in the past ten years, and the proportion of employment in the world’s top 500 enterprises and strategic emerging industries is over 50% of the total number of employment.
The university has built 40 national and provincial scientific research bases, such as State Key Laboratory of New Material Composite Technology, State Key Laboratory of Silicate Building Materials, State Engineering Laboratory of Fiber Optic Sensing Technology, National Water Transportation Safety Engineering Technology Research Center, etc. It has also built 3 provincial collaborative innovation centers, such as Collaborative Innovation Center of Ministry of Inland Waterway Intelligent Shipping, Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center of Auto Parts Technology, Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center of Safety Warning and Emergency Linkage Technology, etc. There are three provincial-level collaborative innovation centers, including the Cooperative Innovation Center of the Ministry of Inland Waterways and Transportation, the Hubei Provincial Cooperative Innovation Center of Automotive Parts and Components Technology, and the Hubei Provincial Cooperative Innovation Center of Safety and Emergency Linkage Technology. Since 2010, the university has been awarded 2 National Natural Science Awards, 16 Technology Invention Awards and 16 Science and Technology Progress Awards as the first completing unit. Since 2010, the university has won 2 National Natural Science Awards, 16 Technical Invention Awards and Science and Technology Progress Awards, and 66 Provincial and Ministerial First-class Awards and above as the first-completion unit; 1 National Science and Technology Progress Grand Prize and 2 First-class Awards as the participating unit; 5,524 authorized invention patents; 1 paper published in the world’s top academic journal Science and 4 papers published in Nature.
The university has established talent training and scientific cooperation with more than 190 universities and research institutions in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Italy, Australia, Russia, the Netherlands and other countries, and has employed more than 200 famous scholars from home and abroad as strategic scientists, chair professors, visiting professors and honorary professors of the university. In addition, 16 high-level international research platforms have been established with famous foreign universities and research institutions.
