Introduction to Hubei University of Technology
Focusing on engineering, Hubei University of Technology (湖北工业大学, website) is a comprehensive university, covering eight disciplines including engineering, liberal arts, science, arts, economics, management, law, and education. Hubei University of Technology was originally established in 1952. In 1984, Hubei Institute of Light Industry merged with Hubei Academy of Agricultural Machinery to form Hubei Polytechnic University, and was renamed as Hubei University of Technology (HBUT) in 2004. HBUT is a key development university of Hubei Province, HBUT has been assessed as “a high level, standard-setting, and backbone university of the province’s higher education system” by the Party Committee and the Provincial Government of Hubei Province. In 1986, HBUT earned the qualification to confer Master’s degrees and recommend outstanding undergraduates to be exempt from the postgraduate entrance exam. It won the title “the university with an excellent graduate employment rate” in 2010. In 2014, it attained Tier 1 university status. In 2012 and 2016, it successively entered membership of the National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Central China Higher Educational Institutions. HBUT won the title “Higher Educational Institution of Reform on Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship” as the first group of universities national wide in 2016. It has been a doctoral degree conferring university since 2017.
HBUT covers an area of more than 1.06 square kilometers, with a building area of about 1 million square meters. HBUT has fully fledged supporting facilities and infrastructure for teaching, scientific research, and public services. The student apartments are equipped with air-conditioning and hot water supply. As an outstanding university library in Hubei Province, the library is comprised of about 6 million volumes, and has an area of 46,000 square meters. HBUT offers a safe and smooth campus network, as well as a smart and fast campus service platform.
HBUT has established 17 schools, Hubei Provincial Mechanical and Electrical Research and Design Institute Co., Ltd., Hubei Agricultural Machinery Engineering Research and Design Institute, and Hubei Agricultural Machinery Appraisal Station, all of which are provincial scientific research institutes，and 1 affiliated college. HBUT enrolls students from a total number of 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities throughout China, and has an enrollment of more than 20,000 full-time students of all types, including over 6,300 postgraduates.
HBUT currently has more than 1,300 full-time faculty members, of whom over 710 got high academic titles, over 552 are doctoral supervisors and master’s supervisors. The proportion of teachers with doctorate degrees has reached more than 51%. HBUT has recruited 25 national elites, and more than 165 provincial experts specializing in various fields. Among them, 1 is dual-hire academician, 2 are under the National Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 2 are honorary professors in the Cheung Kong Scholars Program initiated by the Ministry of Education, 2 are winners of the National Special Support Program for High-level Talents, 2 are winners of the National Talents Project, 8 experts enjoy special grants from the State Council, 1 is outstanding mid-aged expert, 3 are National Role Model (Excellent) faculty members，5 are senior foreign experts. The faculty also includes 25 experts under the Hubei Provincial Recruitment Program of Global Experts, 111 Chutian Scholars, 4 with the title of Reputable Teacher in Hubei, 2 masters of Reputable Teacher’s workshop in Hubei, and 2 Chutian Mentor Award winners. Additionally, HBUT has recruited 358 influential scholars, 9 of which are domestic academicians and 8 are foreign academicians, as part-time professors from renowned domestic and overseas universities, scientific research institutes, and large-scale enterprises and public institutions.
Hubei University of Technology now has 55 undergraduate programs, of which 4 are featured nationally for innovative content, 3 are selected programs of the “Excellent Engineer Scheme” of the Ministry of Education, 4 are selected programs of the “Excellent Teacher Scheme” of the Ministry of Education, 270 are university-industry training programs, 19 provincial top-ranked majors in Hubei Province, 8 provincial branded majors, 24 majors in strategic emerging (pillar) industries and Jingchu outstanding talents collaborative education plan; 10 provincial excellent teaching teams, 8 outstanding grass-roots teaching organizations in undergraduate education. 8 are comprehensive pilot reform programs of Hubei Province, 8 are branded programs of Hubei Province, 9 are selected programs of “Professional Training Scheme for Strategic Emerging (Backbone) Industries” of Hubei Province, and 1 is a selected program of “Pilot Program for Nurturing Outstanding Innovative Professionals” of Hubei Province. 11 programs including Mechanical Design & Automation has obtained accreditation from the China Engineering Education Accreditation Association. HBUT has built 2 state-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 3 national engineering practice education centers; 10 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers (2 of them are key centers), 6 provincial centers for internship and practical training (3 of them are demostration centers), 3 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching demonstration centers; 1 state-level demonstration virtual simulation experimental teaching program, 3 state-level “Boutique Video Open Courses”, 4 provincial demonstration virtual simulation experimental teaching programs, as well as 35 Hubei online Courses including provincial “Boutique Video Open Courses”, “Boutique Resource Sharing Courses” and “Boutique Online Open Courses” .
In recent years, it has proactively aimed to satisfy national and regional strategic demands of the development of green technologies as well as the greening of traditional technologies, and has endeavored to implement the “135+” Discipline Developmental Strategy focusing on green technologies. HBUT has 1 provincial “double first-class” construction discipline, 1 provincial leading discipline, 5 provincial characteristic disciplines, 4 key (nurtured) provincial disciplines, 2 provincial leading and characteristic discipline collections, and 37 disciplines under the “Hubei Provincial Chutian Scholar Scheme”. HBUT has established 1 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization, 21 general Master’s degree conferral programs, 1 sub-general Master’s degree conferral programs, 16 professional Master’s degree conferral program categories.
Hubei University of Technology has 1 key laboratory accredited by the Ministry of Education, 1 postgraduate innovation center accredited by the Ministry of Education, 1 state-level technology conversion demonstration center, 2 post-doctoral research centers, 13 provincial postgraduates research centers, 2 provincial collaborative innovation centers, 5 provincial key laboratories, 17 provincial engineering technology (research) centers, 2 provincial international cooperation centers, 2 provincial engineering laboratories, 6 provincial humanities & social sciences key research workshops, and 28 provincial university-industry co-constructed research and development centers. Since 2012, HBUT has presided over more than 2,000 scientific research programs, over 350 of them are at the state level. It has published more than 450 monographs and teaching materials, over 1,100 papers on SCI and 1,700 papers on EI. With more than 2,000 authorized patents, HBUT has earned 144 awards for science and technology, such as 1 national prize and 22 provincial prizes. Under the major demand of regional industrial development and technology research, HBUT keeps a long-term cooperation with more than 400 large and medium-sized enterprises, which positions it near the top of the ranking list for Science and Technology Service for Economic and Social Development of Hubei Province among provincial higher educational institutions. Hubei University of Technology undertakes 3 publications, namely China Mechanical Engineering (http://www.cmemo.org.cn/CN/volumn/home.shtml), Hubei Nongjihua (http://hbnjh.hbut.edu.cn/), and Journal of Hubei University and Technology (http://qks.hbut.edu.cn/). Selected in the EI source catalog, the China Mechanical Engineering has won “Top 100 Outstanding Academic Journals of China” for 12 years straight and is highly rated in “Journals of China with Highest International Academic Impact”, “Boutique Technical Journals of China”, and “Top 100 Technical Journals of China”.
Throughout its longstanding course of operation, HBUT has developed the motto and spirit of “the cultivation of virtue, expansion of knowledge, pursuit of truth, and stimulation of innovation” and the standard of “student-oriented, teacher first, free development and global vision” as well as the educational philosophy is to build a modern university with quality, talents, technology, opening-up and rule of law, improving the conception of management as “principal responsibility system under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, professor governing teaching, democratic administration”. On the basis of “located in Hubei and serve the industry”, HBUT aims to foster high-qualified applied professionals who possess innovative and entrepreneurial competence as well as practical skills, and proactively strengthens the innovative “721” professionals education reform, the quality of education continuously improving and the social impact continually extending.
In recent years, HBUT students have achieved outstanding accomplishments and won highest ranking awards in competitions such as National “Challenge Cup” University Student Entrepreneurial Plan Competition, National “Challenge Cup” Academic and Scientific Works Competition, Mathematical Modeling Competition, English Competition, Innovative Mechanical Design Competition, Structural Design Competition, Electronic Design Competition, Smart Automobile Competition, National University Student Social Practice Evaluation, and so on. HBUT ranked 73rd in the 2014-2018 evaluation of the training of innovative talents and disciplinary competitions in universities of China published by the Chinese Higher Education Association. In sports events, HBUT basketball team has broken into the Top 16 of CUBA; HBUT students have won championships in both the Men’s Singles (the Super Team) and the Women’s Singles (the Super Team) of the National Table Tennis Tournaments. HBUT has maintained over 95% employment for many years; in fact, it has been so consistent in this rate that Hubei Provincial Department of Education has honored HBUT with an exemption from ongoing verification. Over the years, HBUT attaches great importance to innovative and entrepreneurial activities among students as it has established Student Pioneering Park, Creative bazaar, provincial creative space, and has been awarded “Hubei Provincial University Student Entrepreneurship Demonstration Center”. Some successful entrepreneurs have won national honors such as “Top 10 Heroes of Village Officials”, “Top 100 Stars of Village Officials”, and so on.
HBUT holds to the opening-up of its operations and has seen continuous development of the internationalization of education. As honored “Hubei Provincial Advanced Organization for Intensifying Opening-up”, it has established cooperative relationships with more than 130 universities, colleges and research institutes from more than 30 countries and regions such as the United States, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Finland, Canada, Australia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.It has started 10 international cooperative programs of undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with approximately 1,300 full-time students. Developing international education of overseas students, HBUT passed the national quality certification for students studying in China. Accredited by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs in 2016, TEFL in China Wuhan Center is the only one university-based center in China serving central China and more. In 2017, HBUT became the first provincial university in Hubei Province to build a 111 Center for discipline innovation and talent introduction, approved by State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs. In 2018, School of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environment was awarded as the first provincial International Development Demonstration School in Hubei province. In 2019, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of the “HBUT Detroit Green Technology Institute”, which is a Sino-US joint engineering institute with non-independent legal entities run by our university and the University of Detroit Mercy in a “4 + 0”dual degree model. HBUT is also a university that owns the qualifications of government-sponsored overseas exchange and research cooperation such as the “Excellent Undergraduate Students” and “Young Backbone Teachers” programs of China Scholarship Council.
