Introduction to Xi’an Medical University
Xi’an Medical University (XMU, website: http://www.xiyi.edu.cn/) is a general university under the administration of Shaanxi Provincial Government. It was originally Shaanxi Provincial Health School, founded in 1951. As a constantly developing institution of higher learning, XMU has gone through multiple stages of development, the Shaanxi Provincial Health Cadre College in 1959 and Shaanxi Medical Senior College in 1994. In February 2006, with approval of the Ministry of Education, it was upgraded to a four-year undergraduate university, named as Xi’an Medical University.
Currently, Xi’an Medical University has 5 directly affiliated hospitals, Affiliated Hospital (Shaanxi Provincial People’s Hospital), First Affiliated Hospital, Second Affiliated Hospital, Affiliated Baoji Hospital and Affiliated Hanjiang Hospital, with hospital beds number about 6000. Besides, it has 20 indirectly affiliated hospitals and 71 internship bases. Among them, the Affiliated Hospital (Shaanxi Provincial People’s Hospital) and the First Affiliated Hospital are large-scale comprehensive Grade III Level A hospitals, organized by Shaanxi Provincial People’s Government. They are also the national general practitioner training bases. Shaanxi Provincial People’s Hospital is the construction unit of Shaanxi Provincial Clinical Medical Research Institute, National Drug Clinical Trial Institute, and National Health Emergency Medical Rescue Team.
In 2017, Xi’an Medical University was identified as“first-class college”construction unit by Shaanxi Provincial Department of Education. It consists of 14 teaching units, Clinical Medicine College, Nursing College, Pharmacy College, etc. It provides general undergraduate education, postgraduate education and continuing education. General undergraduate education includes 18 majors, such as Clinical Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Preventive Medicine and Stomatology. The Clinical Medicine was authorized to grant master degree of first-level discipline. Also, it is the authorized degree-conferring centre for 16 second-level discipline of master’s degree programs, including General Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery and Ophthalmology. It has 3 province-level key programs (characteristic programs) and 3 province-level Professional Comprehensive Reform Pilot Programs.
Xi’an Medical University has 810 full-time teachers, 463 of whom are professors and associate professors, accounting for 57.2% out of the total; 608 with a master or doctoral degree, accounting for 75.1 % out of the total. 2 professors receive special government allowance from the State Council; 8 receive Sanqin talent allowance; 7 selects of Shaanxi Province Three-Five Talent Project, Provincial Outstanding Contribution Expert, Young and Middle-aged Sci-Tech Innovation Leaders and Provincial Sci-Tech Star; 6 Provincial Prominent Teachers; 11 selects of national Women Pace-Setter, provincial and ministerial-leve Outstanding Individua, and Virtuous Teachers. Now, there are 13,673 students at campus, with 13,375 undergraduate students and 298 graduate students. Since 2006, more than 30 thousand medical talents graduated from Xi’an Medical University, with employment rate keeps above 90%.
Guided by the priority funding fields of National Natural Science Foundation, Xi’an Medical University insists to take discipline construction as leading direction and increases the construction progress of scientific research platforms. There are 1 research center for respiratory disease prevention and treatment engineering in Shaanxi Province, 1 key laboratory for ischemic cardiovascular disease in Shaanxi Province, 1 key laboratory for prevention and treatment of brain diseases in Shaanxi Province, 1 science popularization base in Shaanxi Province, 6 clinical medicine sub-centers in Shaanxi Province and 7 school-level research institutes (centers). In the past five years, Xi’an Medical University was approved 37 projects by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 project by national social science foundation, 1 project by other national ministry, 128 provincial projects; got 2 awards for provincial first-class scientific research achievements, 7 awards for second-class achievements, 6 awards for third-class achievements, and 60 patents.
Xi’an Medical University established cooperative relation with Weber State University in America, Kyung Hee University in Korea, Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome in Italy, Lund University in Sweden, Harding University in America, and Nepal’s National Academy of Medical Sciences. Solid foundation for further international communication and cooperation has been laid.
Currently, by vigorously implementing the strategy of “Entrench University with Quality, Revitalize University with features, Strengthen University with Talents, Manage University with laws”, Xi’an Medical University is promoting education quality, research strength and social service ability. The University steps into a new stage of development, featured by connotation development. All of faculties and students in Xi’an Medical University are working hard together, striving to establish Xi’an Medical University to Northwestern Medical University.

About Xi’an
Xi’an (
Panorama) is the capital of Shaanxi Province and the oldest of the Four Great Ancient Capitals, having held the position under several of the most important dynasties in Chinese history. It is about 2 hours by air from Beijing and 2 hours from Shanghai. Known as the leading city of China’s Western Development Drive Program since 1990s, Xi’an is an important economic, cultural, industrial and educational center of the central-northwest region, providing visitors with modern and convenient facilities.
Transportation
Xi’an was the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, and played a very important part in Chinese history. Today Xi’an is one of the most important and convenient transportation hubs in central and western China. Frequent flights, trains and buses connect the city with other major cities all around the country. The urban transportation of the city has been somewhat frustrating in recent years because of the metro construction. Now?metro line 1, line 2 and line 3 are in operation. Several other lines are also under construction or in the planning process. For now the buses and taxis can take you to get around the city.
Food
Xi’an is a foodie paradise, with excellent restaurants serving local and international cuisine. You can’t come to Xi’an without sampling the following: savory, often spicy roujiaomo “burgers”; DIY roupaomo, a soupy concoction of bread in mutton stew; cumin-laden meat skewers in the Muslim Quarter; and refreshing liangpi rice noodles with peanut sauce, perfect for cooling down in the heat of summer. Make sure to visit the night market to explore the flavors of Shaanxi street food.
