Introduction to Wuhan University

Wuhan University (website) is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is the key construction university of the “985 Project” and “211 Project” of the country. It is the first batch of “double-class” construction universities.

Wuhan University traced back to the 1893 Qing Dynasty, the Governor of Huguang, Zhang Zhidong, played the self-improvement school founded by the Qing government. After inheriting and inheriting, it was named the National Wuhan University in 1928 and was the first batch of national universities in modern China. In 1946, the school has formed a school-running pattern of six major colleges of literature, law, science, industry, agriculture, and medicine. After the founding of New China, Wuhan University was highly valued by the party and the government. In 1958, Chairman Mao Zedong visited Wu Da to inspect. In 1993, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Wuhan University, Jiang Zemin and other party and state leaders inscribed congratulations. Since the reform and opening up, Wuhan University has taken the lead in education and teaching reform in domestic universities, and various undertakings have flourished, and the overall strength has risen remarkably. In 1999, the world’s leading journal, Science, listed Wuhan University as one of the most outstanding universities in China. In 2000, Wuhan University merged with Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering, Wuhan University of Surveying and Mapping, and Hubei Medical University to form a new Wuhan University, which opened a new page in the reform and development of the school. Over the past 10 years, the school’s comprehensive strength and core competitiveness have been continuously improved. In 2019, the school ranked 257th in the QS World University Rankings.

Wuhan University is surrounded by the East Lake, sitting on the Lushan Mountain. The campus has a beautiful environment and picturesque scenery. It is known as “the most beautiful university in China”. The school covers an area of 5,195 acres and a building area of 2.71 million square meters. The palace-style buildings in the combination of Chinese and Western styles are simple and elegant, and the 26 early buildings are listed as “National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units”.

Wuhan University has a complete range of disciplines, comprehensive and distinctive features, covering 12 disciplines such as philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and art. The school has 34 colleges (departments) in the humanities, social sciences, science, engineering, information science and medicine six universities and three tertiary hospitals. There are 123 undergraduate majors. 17 disciplines entered the top 1% of ESI’s global rankings, 5 first-level disciplines, 17 secondary disciplines were identified as national key disciplines, 6 disciplines were national key (nurturing) disciplines, and there were 10 first-class construction disciplines. 57 first-level disciplines have the right to grant master’s degrees. 46 first-level disciplines have the right to confer doctoral degrees. There are 42 postdoctoral mobile stations.

There are more than 3,770 full-time teachers in the school, including 2,890 associate professors, 11 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 7 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 3 academicians of the Eurasian Academy of Sciences, 9 senior professors of humanities and social sciences, and 22 “973 projects” (including Chief Scientist of National Major Basic Research Program, 6 “863 Project” Program Area Experts, 4 National Innovation Research Groups, 65 National Outstanding Youth Science Fund Winners, 15 National Teaching Masters, 23 National New Century “Hundreds” Tens of talented projects were selected, 65 “Changjiang Scholars Awards” special professors, 24 “Changjiang Scholars Awards” lecture professors, and 9 “Changjiang Scholars and Innovation Team Development Program” innovation teams.

Wuhan University has strong scientific research and outstanding achievements. The school has 4 national key laboratories, 2 national engineering technology research centers, 2 national field science observation and research stations, 2 2011 collaborative innovation centers, 2 national high-end think tanks, 2 national science and technology basic conditions sharing platforms, and 9 Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education and 5 Engineering Research Centers of the Ministry of Education; also has 7 key research bases for humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, 10 national basic scientific research and talent training bases, 10 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, and 3 countries. Level virtual simulation experiment teaching center and a national university student cultural quality education base. 36 professional publications are published on a regular basis.

Seeking knowledge at Wu Da, Cheng Cai is in the air. Wuhan University took the lead in proposing a new concept of “creation, innovation, entrepreneurship” education, cultivating “thick foundation, wide caliber, high quality, innovative” composite talents, and actively exploring talent training models that adapt to economic and social development. The school has 29,405 undergraduate students, 19,699 postgraduates, 7,163 doctoral students, and 2,162 foreign students. Since the establishment of the school, the school has trained more than 500,000 senior professionals of various types. There are more than 100 academicians in the two academies, which have made important contributions to national construction and social progress.
