Introduction to Tianjin Medical University
Tianjin Medical University (TMU) was founded in 1951 as a higher medical school approved by the former State Council after the founding of New China. In June 1994, Tianjin Medical University was established by merging Tianjin Medical College and Tianjin Second Medical College, and in December 1996, it became the only municipal institution under the national “211 Project” in Tianjin, and in October 2015, it became the first university jointly built by Tianjin Municipal People’s Government, National Health Commission and Ministry of Education. In October 2015, it became a university jointly built by Tianjin Municipal People’s Government, the National Health Commission and the Ministry of Education, and in September 2017, it was selected as one of the national “World Class Discipline Construction Universities”.
TMU is actively involved in the cause of medical higher education in China, and was one of the first two medical schools approved by the State to try out the eight-year system, and one of the first 15 institutions to try out the seven-year system. At present, the university has 2 campuses on Meteorological Terrace Road and Guangdong Road and 8 university hospitals. There are 21 undergraduate programs, 19 colleges (departments) and one independent college. There are 10,491 full-time undergraduate students, including 5,409 undergraduates, 3,457 master students, 798 doctoral students, and 827 international students.
Tianjin Medical University has 8,668 professional and technical personnel of all kinds, including 709 senior and 1,303 deputy senior. There are 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 foreign academician, 12 winners of the National Outstanding Young Scientists Fund and 6 winners of the Excellent Young Scientists Fund, 7 leaders of the National “Ten Thousand Plan” and 2 young talents, 15 candidates of the National Hundred Million Talents Project, the Chief Scientist of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Chief Scientist of “973”. There are 4 chief scientists of “973”, 17 experts with outstanding contributions from the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, and 12 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions from the National Health Commission.
The University has 11 national first-class undergraduate majors, 1 Tianjin first-class undergraduate majors, 5 national specialties, 1 national comprehensive professional reform pilot, 2 national teaching teams, 20 Tianjin teaching teams, 30 Tianjin teaching masters, 5 teaching teams and 10 teachers won the Tianjin “Outstanding Teaching Team in Combating the Epidemic” award. The title of “Excellent Teaching Team and Excellent Teachers in Curriculum Civics and Politics in the Fight against Epidemic” was awarded to 5 teaching teams and 10 teachers; 7 national quality courses, 5 national quality resource sharing courses, 3 national quality video open courses, 3 national bilingual demonstration courses, 5 national first-class undergraduate courses, 18 Tianjin first-class undergraduate construction courses; 3 national experimental zones for innovation of talent cultivation mode, 3 national experimental teaching centers. In 2002 and 2008, the university passed the undergraduate teaching and seven-year higher medical education teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education with excellent scores, and in 2012, 2013 and 2014, the university passed the accreditation of nursing, dentistry and clinical medicine programs of the Ministry of Education respectively. Since 2009, the university has won one first-class prize and three second-class prizes for national teaching achievements, and 12 first-class prizes and 15 second-class prizes for municipal teaching achievements. In 1997, the International Medical College, the administration department of international student education, was officially established, and the international students come from 104 countries. In 2010, the first English Teacher Training Center for International Students (Medicine) of the Ministry of Education was established in the university.
TMU has 10 doctoral degree authorization points in first-level disciplines and 2 professional degree authorization points in doctoral disciplines; 12 master’s degree authorization points in first-level disciplines and 7 professional degree authorization points in master’s degrees. There are 6 post-doctoral mobile stations. There are 435 supervisors for doctoral students and 1304 supervisors for master students.
TMU has 5 national key disciplines, 18 Tianjin key disciplines, 4 Tianjin first-class disciplines, 4 Tianjin characteristic disciplines (groups); 7 disciplines are ranked in the top 1% of the global ESI database; 23 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, 15 research institutes, and the Tianjin Medical Epigenetics Collaborative Innovation Center has been approved as a provincial and ministerial collaborative innovation center. There are 1 international science and technology cooperation base of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 11 international science and technology cooperation bases in Tianjin, 1 innovation team in key areas of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and 2 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, which have received rolling support. “Since the 12th Five-Year Plan, the university has undertaken 2,562 vertical projects at provincial and ministerial levels with funding of over 1.2 billion yuan; received 108 science and technology awards at provincial and ministerial levels, including 1 National Science and Technology Progress Award, 4 Ministry of Education Scientific Research Excellence Awards, 1 He Liang He Li Award, 1 Tianjin Science and Technology Major Achievement Award, and 1 Tianjin International Science and Technology Cooperation Award. In 2016, the university was awarded the “Model Base for Training Innovative Talents” by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
There are 13 national key clinical specialties and 16 Tianjin key clinical specialties in TMU affiliated hospitals. The Cancer Hospital is the first national clinical medical research center for malignant tumors, and the General Hospital, Cancer Hospital, Second Hospital and Eye Hospital are approved as Tianjin Clinical Medical Research Centers. The university has 18 non-directly affiliated clinical colleges.
Tianjin Medical University has established academic exchanges and cooperation with 96 universities and research institutions in 24 countries and regions, carried out high-level international cooperation in the field of medicine and biomedicine, employed 159 world-renowned medical experts and professors as honorary professors and visiting professors in various disciplines of the university, established the ” Foreign Expert Advisory Committee” to promote the international development of the university.
