Introduction to Tianjin Normal University
Tianjin Normal University (TJNU) is the inheritor of a hundred years of teacher education in Tianjin, the birthplace of Tianjin’s basic education, and the only teacher training university in Tianjin that trains quality teachers for basic education. Tianjin Normal University was founded in 1958 as Tianjin Normal College and renamed as Tianjin Normal University in 1982, and in 1999, the former Tianjin Normal University, Tianjin Normal College and Tianjin College of Education were merged to form the new Tianjin Normal University.
TJNU aims to be a high-level teacher-training university with distinctive features and world-renowned reputation. It insists on the foundation of moral education, remembers the mission of “educating people for the Party and the country”, comprehensively implements the Party’s education policy, adheres to the direction of socialism, takes high-quality teacher-training education as the “fundamental policy”, deeply cultivates and improves the teacher-training system, and makes it a firm pursuit to provide high-quality teachers for basic education, cultivates the roots and forges the soul, enlightens the mind, strengthens the foundation and nurtures the moral of teachers.
With the goal of cultivating “four good” teachers, the university has been cultivating educational sentiments and training excellent teachers. The school has been selected to participate in the Ministry of Education’s reform program for excellence in elementary school teacher training and excellence in secondary school teacher training, to undertake the Ministry of Education’s “National Training Program”, and to be approved as a national experimental base for collaborative innovation in teacher development.
In the construction of the “Double Ten Thousand Plan” of the national first-class undergraduate majors, the departments of ideological and political education, political science and administration, applied psychology, world history, education, elementary education, educational technology, Chinese language and literature, mathematics and applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, computer science and technology, geography, English, Korean language, law, administration, journalism, and other subjects have been selected. Twenty majors, including Law, Administration, Journalism and International Economics and Trade, have been approved as national first-class undergraduate majors; eight majors, including Physical Education, Electronic Information Science and Technology, Fashion and Costume Design, Chinese International Education, Geographic Information Science, Archival Science, Drama, Film and Literature, and Fine Arts, have been approved as first-class undergraduate majors in Tianjin.
TJNU covers an area of 3,500 acres, with 771 acres of ecological lakes and wetlands, and a construction area of 860,000 square meters. The university has strong faculty, complete disciplines, excellent teaching facilities, strong humanistic spirit, beautiful and elegant environment, and unique ecological style.
The university has 27 party and government departments, 2 academic departments, 20 colleges, and 17 directly affiliated units. There are 74 undergraduate majors, 8 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degree, 1 doctoral degree authorized for education, 33 first-level disciplines authorized for master’s degree, and 16 professional degree categories for master’s degree, involving 9 disciplines such as economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management and art.
The university has gathered high-level talents, including one convener and two members of the Seventh Discipline Review Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, one deputy director and two members of the Teaching Guidance Committee of Professional Degree Education, one deputy director and nine members of the Teaching Guidance Committee of Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education, one deputy director of the Teaching Guidance Committee of Primary School Teacher Training of Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education, one member of the Teaching Guidance Committee of Secondary School Teacher Training, and one member of the Fourth National Committee of National Education. It has 2 national key disciplines, 7 first-class disciplines in Tianjin, 18 key disciplines in Tianjin, 15 special disciplines (groups) in Tianjin, and chemistry has been ranked in the top 1% of the world by ESI for 9 years in a row, and the School of Marxism has been approved as a national key Marxist school. Four disciplines, including psychology, political science, world history and Marxist theory, and the master’s degree in education, have entered the B+ category, and two disciplines, education and Chinese language and literature, have entered the B category. There are two national experimental teaching demonstration centers for journalism and communication and teacher education, three provincial and municipal humanities and social science bases, seven provincial and municipal engineering centers, international joint research centers and key laboratories, and seven postdoctoral research stations. TJNU has 25,141 full-time undergraduates, 5,517 full-time master students, 589 doctoral students and 2,150 international students. There are 2,457 faculty members, including 1,675 full-time teachers, 985 with senior titles and 1,021 with doctoral degrees.
The university pays attention to the research of humanities and social sciences and promotes the construction of new liberal arts. Professor Shen Deli’s book “Eye Movement Research on Students’ Chinese Reading Process” and Professor Xu Datong’s book “Lectures on Chinese Traditional Political Culture” won the first prize of the Fourth and Eighth National Awards for Outstanding Achievements in Scientific Research of Higher Education Institutions (Humanities and Social Sciences) respectively, 7 second prizes and 13 third prizes of similar awards, and 2 young achievement awards. It won the first prize and the third prize of the National Award for Outstanding Achievements in Educational Scientific Research.
The university has strengthened teacher education, highlighted the quality of teacher education, and formed a “double-high” teacher education model that combines professional education in subjects and professional education for teachers. We have expanded the proportion of teacher-training students year by year and established the Tianjin Publicly Financed Teacher Training Program. The university offers a teacher education module and a minor degree in teacher education to all undergraduates, creating conditions for students who have the ambition to teach, the desire to be teachers, and the willingness to teach and teach well. Students won 1 gold, 1 silver and 8 bronze medals in the China International “Internet+” Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. The number of teacher education teachers and the number of senior title holders of the university ranked among the top in China, and a team of teacher education teachers who meet the requirements of “four guides and four unities” is growing.
Tianjin Normal University focuses on the construction of a new type of think tank, and takes the initiative to provide governmental services for the scientific decision-making of the Party and the government. Six think tanks, including National Governance Research Center, Regional Development Strategy and Reform Research Center, Emergency Management Research Center, Free Economic Zone Research Institute, Basic Education Decision-making Service Research Center and Tianjin Public Sector Information Service Evaluation and Governance Center of Tianjin Normal University, have entered the China Think Tank Index (CTTI).
The university strives to develop natural science disciplines and promote the construction of new engineering disciplines. The School of Artificial Intelligence was established, and the integration of industry and education was actively promoted to serve social and economic development. Formed comprehensive strategic cooperation with Huawei, KDDI, Kirin Software, 360 Group, etc. The research results of natural disciplines won the first prize of natural science achievements in Tianjin and the first prize of scientific and technological progress in Tianjin.
The university focuses on the penetration of arts and sciences and cross-fertilization of disciplines. The university has established the Institute for the Protection of Ancient Books, the Institute for the Construction and Comprehensive Management of Internet Content, the Institute of Language Psychology and Cognitive Science, the Institute of Intercultural and World Literature, the International Research Center for Emotional Intelligence and 11 university-level multidisciplinary cross-fertilization innovation teams.
The university has actively explored the whole staff, the whole process and all-round education, and formed an education system based on the integration of “classroom and classroom, work team, project education, online and offline, on campus and off campus”. The creative “three into eight lecture method” and “five with” mode of practical teaching in Civics and Political Science class have been promoted. Our university has created fresh experience in the teaching reform of Civics and Political Science course, which has been reported by the central media and newspapers more than 50 times. The School of Political Science and Administration was awarded the title of “Advanced Collective of National Education System”, and three of the four Civics courses were awarded the “Wonderful Lesson” by the Ministry of Education. Tianjin Normal University insists on promoting the opening of the school to the outside world. It has established friendly cooperation with 177 universities, institutions or local governments in 33 countries and regions. The university has cooperated with South Korea, Japan and Russia to hold 4 Sino-foreign cooperative education programs, and has been approved as the first “Model Base for Studying in China” by the Ministry of Education of China.
