Introduction to Southwest University
Southwest University (西南大学, website) is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and Chongqing Municipality. The main body of the university is located in Beibei District, Chongqing. It is located on the foot of Jinyun Mountain and on the banks of the Jialing River. It covers an area of more than 8,000 acres, covers an area of 1.65 million square meters, and has a green area rate of 40%.
The university traces its origins to the Chuandong Normal School established in 1906, which has evolved several times. In 1936, it was renamed the Sichuan Provincial College of Education. In 1950, the Departments of Education, Chinese, Foreign Languages, History, Geography, and Mathematics of the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Education merged with the National Women’s Teachers College established in 1940 to establish the Southwest Teachers College. The Departments of Agronomy, Horticulture, and Agricultural Manufacturing were founded in 1946. The private Xianghui College was merged to establish the Southwest Agricultural College. In 1985, the two universities were renamed Southwest Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University. In 2000, Chongqing Vocational College of Light Industry was merged into Southwest Normal University; in 2001, Southwest Agricultural University, Sichuan College of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, and Citrus Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences merged to form the new Southwest Agricultural University. In 2005, Southwest Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University merged to form Southwest University, which opened a new chapter in school development.
Southwest University has a full range of disciplines, comprehensiveness and distinctive features. There are 53 first-level disciplines covering 12 disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, teaching, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and art. In this category, there are 3 national key disciplines, 2 national key (cultivation) disciplines, 28 first-level disciplines have the right to grant doctoral degrees, 51 first-level disciplines have the right to grant masters degrees, and there are 1 professional doctorate and 19 Professional master’s degree, there are 25 post-doctoral research stations, 8 subject areas enter the top 1% of the ESI world ranking.
The university currently has 37 colleges (departments) and 105 undergraduate majors, including 20 national specialty majors and 37 Chongqing specialty majors. Rich teaching resources, there are 4 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 3 national virtual simulation experimental centers, 13 Chongqing experimental teaching demonstration centers, there are 46 national excellent courses, 96 excellent courses in Chongqing, there are national 1 cultural education base for college students. At present, there are more than 50,000 students, including nearly 40,000 ordinary undergraduates, more than 11,000 master and doctoral students, and more than 2,000 international students.

During the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, the number of national scientific research projects of the school reached more than 900, and the total funding for scientific research reached 2.035 billion yuan. It was awarded “973” projects, “863” projects (projects), major projects of the National Social Science Fund, and national priorities More than 700 national projects such as R & D planning projects, national major cultural engineering projects, more than 1,000 authorized patents, 50 new species of animals and plants have been bred, more than 800 monographs have been published, and the number of natural science search papers in the three major SCIE, EI, and ISTP More than 5,400 papers, and more than 3600 papers in the three major humanities and social sciences searched in SSCI, A & HCI, and CSSCI. Southwest University has established strategic cooperative relations with more than 50 places, cities, and counties in Chongqing, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Jiangsu, Shandong, and other provinces and cities. It has carried out effective project cooperation with more than 500 administrative institutions and 26 enterprises in 26 provinces and cities, and has achieved significant economic and social benefits. Among them, the cooperation with the county schools of Chongqing Shizhu Tujia Autonomous County has been widely praised, and is known as the “Shizhu Model” which effectively combines industry, university and research.
The university actively promotes the internationalization process, and has established long-term friendly and cooperative relations with more than 140 universities and research institutions in nearly 40 countries and regions such as the United States, Canada, Thailand, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Australia, and Russia. Kazakhstan cooperated to establish 3 Confucius Institutes.
