Introduction to Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Founded in 1958, Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (FJUTCM, website) is a key university in Fujian province as well as one of the earliest established Traditional Chinese Medicine universities in China.

FJUTCM consists of 13 colleges(departments) and 2 research institutes, with 17 specialties for Doctoral candidates, 46 specialties for Master candidates, 2 centers for post-doctoral studies and 20 specialties for undergraduates, such as TCM, Acupuncture & Massage, Clinical Integrative Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Medical Imaging, Pharmacology, TCM Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Marketing, Nursing, Public Utilities Management, Applied Psychology and Food Science & Engineering. At present, the total enrollment of full-time students is more than 12,000, including over 1,500 postgraduates.

The number of staff of the university is more than 3,000, among which over 500 are professional and technical personnel with senior titles. There are a national TCM master, 3 national famous TCM doctors, a batch of national young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions, experts enjoying special allowance from the State Council, instructors to the heir of the national veteran TCM experts, National Top 100 Outstanding Young TCM Doctors, and National Outstanding Teachers.

FJUTCM got “A” level in the undergraduate education evaluation conducted by Ministry of Education both in 2002 and 2007. The university also got good results in the evaluation conducted by Ministry of Education on the Pilot Degree Program of Traditional Chinese Medicine in December 2010, and the Pilot Degree Program of TCM Pharmacology in May 2017, In 2016, the physical therapist professional entry level education program was awarded accreditation by the World Confederation for Physical Therapy, and the occupational therapy program was evaluated and approved by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists. At present, there are 3 national quality courses, 2 national teaching faculties, 4 national characteristic specialties, 1 national bilingual demonstration course, 1 national Innovation Experimental Field for Talents Cultivation, 2 national quality open video course, 3 national quality resources sharing courses, 1 national pilot program for comprehensive reform, 2 national pilot projects for the cultivation of outstanding TCM doctors, 1 national off-campus practical educational base for college students and 134 projects of innovation and entrepreneurship training for college students. The university received 1 national 2nd award, 3 provincial outstanding awards, 5 provincial 1st awards and 9 provincial 2nd awards in the recent 2 competitions on teaching achievements.

There are 20 ministry-level key disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM). Since 2003, as one of the eight key universities in Fujian province, FJUTCM has focused on discipline construction, with coordinately development of other related fields and has made remarkable achievements. Furthermore, FJUTCM was once again on the list of the key universities in Fujian province in 2008.

FJUTCM has 2 National-Local Joint Engineering Research Center, 1 key laboratory of Ministry of Education, 1 TCM Rehabilitation Research Center of SATCM, 3 Key Laboratories of SATCM, 8 national top-level laboratories, 1 TCM Literature Retrieval Center of SATCM, 2 provincial “2011 collaborative innovation center” and 17 key laboratories, bases & engineering research centers of Fujian province. FJUTCM successively received 659 awards for the scientific achievements, 12 of which are national awards. Since 2011, the university further promoted scientific innovation, increased investment on research, and undertook 2870 research projects, among which 206 are national ones, 570 are provincial ones, and received 47 national and provincial awards. In particular, the university has made great breakthroughs in national research projects, such as projects supported by National Key Technology R & D Program, projects supported by National Basic Research Program (973 Program), programs of National Natural Science Foundation and projects supported by the Joint Funds of Cross-Straits Scientific Cooperation.

FJUTCM has established a comprehensive system for clinical teaching and practice with 4 directly affiliated hospitals, among which the Affiliated Rehabilitation Hospital is the first rehabilitation hospital in China that has been awarded a three-year CARF accreditation, 16 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 58 teaching hospitals and over 50 hospitals for clinical practices. There are 4 national key subjects (rehabilitation, anus-intestine, spleen & stomach, and surgery), 17 ministry-level key subjects of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The university also set up Guoyitang Clinic in Pingshan Campus to provide medical service to the public.

FJUTCM has excellent teaching conditions. Qishan and Pingshan campuses occupy an area of about 68.67 hectares with a floor space of over 320,000 m2. The value of teaching and research apparatus is more than 250 million yuan and there are 1.2 million paper books and 730,000 e-books in the library. Both campuses are equipped with modern teaching, researching and living facilities. For its graceful environment, rich and vibrant campus life with TCM characteristics, the university was awarded as nation pioneer unit on TCM culture construction, National Model Unit in Afforesation, the 1st batch of National Conservation Oriented Demonstration Unit of Public Institutions, and has been consecutively entitled “civilized campus” for seven times by Fujian provincial committee & government.

FJUTCM is the first TCM university in the mainland to enroll Taiwan students and now there are about 300 overseas students, most of whom are from Taiwan. So far, the university has held 11 Cross-Strait Symposium on Traditional Chinese Medicine. FJUTCM has established cooperation with universities and relevant institutions from United States, Germany, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Sweden, Demark, Finland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc. and has established a multi-level education framework including PhD, Master, Bachelor degree programs and short-term training program.

In the new phase of development, following the guidance of scientific outlook on development, the university will stick to the school motto Pursue Excellence, Strive For Perfection, keep up with developments and changes constantly and make every effort to build the university into a teaching-research TCM university with distinctive features, which specializes mainly in TCM and develops in other disciplines coordinately and serves the Core Area of the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road & Fujian Pilot Free Trade Zone.
