Introduction to Shijiazhuang Tiedao University
Shijiazhuang Tiedao University (STDU, 石家庄铁道大学 website) was established in 1950, the predecessor of Chinese People’s Liberation Army Railway Engineering Institute. The university is located in Shijiazhuang city, the capital of Heibei province. It only takes one hour by high-speed train to travel from Shijiazhuang to Beijing. STDU is a technical university with the distinctive characteristic of applied engineering, and offers a wide range of disciplines covering science, management, economics, arts and social sciences. It has been listed as one of the national key universities since 1979 and now it is one of the top universities in Hebei Province.
Students
The university has been enrolling students from all over the country who are qualified for first-batch enrollment based on their performance in the College Entrance Examination. Currently, it has 28,000 full-time students, including 2,700 postgraduates and more than 230 international students.
Faculty
STDU has 1800 teaching staff, including 230 professors and 450 associate professors, 533 Doctoral and Master Supervisors, 2 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and more than 180 scholars, such as Cheung Kong Scholar, Program 973 chief scientists, State Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, State Outstanding Professional and Technical Personnel winner, Nationally Known Teacher and Candidates of New Century Talents Program.
Schools
There are 19 institutional departments and 25 research centers in STDU. It is currently offering over 50 undergraduate majors, 2 Level-1 Disciplines in Doctoral Programs, 2 Post-doctoral Research Centers, 14 Level-1 Disciplines in Master Programs, and 5 Professional Master Degree Programs including Master of Engineering (10 authorized fields), Master of Business Administration, Master of Law, Master of Landscape Architecture, and Master of Finance.
Facilities
STDU possesses high level laboratories, including 1 National Key Laboratory Breeding Base Co-constructed by Hebei Province and Ministry,4 Ministerial and Provincial Key Laboratories, 1 Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center, 1 Soft Science Research Base in Hebei Province,1 Hebei Province Philosophy and Social Sciences Research Base, 4 key laboratories and engineering technology research centers by the state-owned enterprises and the university. And there are 2.3 million copies of printed books and 32 electronic databases in library.
Achievements
STDU adheres to the university’s philosophy of “quality first, strengthen the internal development, win in characteristic and pursuing excellence”. It is devoted to the teaching reform integrated by the knowledge education, competency based education and quality education. The university has received 1 first prize, 4 second prizes of State Excellent Teaching Achievements, and 71 provincial prizes. In 2011, the plan for “Educating and Cultivating Excellent Engineers in China” was approved to be implemented in STDU. In 2012, the National Training Programs of Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Undergraduates was approved to be carried out in STDU. In 2006,the university was rated as “excellent” in undergraduate teaching assessment by the Ministry of Education, and passed the evaluation again in 2016.
Graduates
Depending on the advantages in railway industry, STDU lays great emphasis on cultivating inter-disciplinary talents with high social responsibilities and innovative spirit for railway construction and management. Therefore, the graduates from Shijiazhuang Tiedao University are favored by employers, and the graduate employment rate keeps over 96% for 10 years in succession. China Railway Construction Corporation, one of the World Top 500 Enterprises, has 70% middle-level and above managers and 70% of senior engineering and technical personnel who graduated from STDU. “Where there is the railway, there are students of STDU”.
Since the university was established, Shijiazhuang Tiedao University has educated more than 110,000 graduates including a large number of well-known scholars, engineering and technical experts and senior management personnel, and 3 academicians were cultivated here during their undergraduate education. During the construction of Qinghai-Tibet Railway time, major publications in China reported exemplary deeds of the graduates from STDU. The former vice premier Li Lanqing acclaimed the graduates from STDU as “young people who are holding up a rainbow”.
Participated Projects
STDU excels in the service of the major state and local projects, aiming at the frontier of science and technology, concentrating on multidisciplinary joint ventures, undertaking and completing a number of projects with significant influence in China and abroad, making a series of achievements that marks the advanced level in China. The university has achieved numerous distinctive results in various fields, such as the new tunnel construction technology and environmental control, transportation emergency engineering, advanced geological forecast, large-scale structural health diagnosis, TBM tunneling technology, traffic environment and safety engineering, project management and other research projects.
In recent years, the school has undertaken the State Program “973” and “863”, projects of the State Science Fund, programs of State Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the National Science Foundation as well as the National Social Science Fund, and plans of National Mars and Moon Exploration, including more than 900 projects and research activities, funded with 8.3 billion Yuan. The University has received more than 210 national and provincial certifications, among which,2 National Scientific and Technological Progress Special Award; 2 first prizes and 6 second prizes of National Scientific and Technological Progress; 2 second prize of National Natural Science; 1 second prize of Chinese Technology Innovation; 1 Chinese Excellent Research Award, and 41 first-class Provincial Natural Science and Technological Progress Awards.
International Cooperation
Shijiazhuang Tiedao University actively promotes the international cooperation and exchanges. It has set up the International Cooperation and Exchange Office and the International Exchange Center. The university has established cooperative relationship with more than 30 universities and research institutions in different countries and regions such as the United States, Britain, Russia, Canada, Australia and Spain. STDU develops extensive cooperation with those countries and regions in the fields of teaching, scientific research, cooperation and exchange. STDU has many students from Asia, America, Europe and Africa. Many bachelor and master programs for overseas students are offered in English, such as Civil Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Computer Science and Technology, International Economics and Trade, etc. Chinese language program is also offered.

Shijiazhuang (
Panorama) , the capital of Hebei Province, neighbors Beijing and Tianjin in the north, Bohai Sea in the east, and lies against the continuous Taihang Mountain in the west. Covering an area of 15.8 thousand square kilometers (6100.4 square miles), it has 6 districts, 12 counties, 5 county-level cities and 1 national-level new and high-tech development zone under its prefecture.
