Xuzhou Expats – Living in Xuzhou
Ruaridh Maclean, English Teacher at China University of Mining and Technology
I especially like traveling. The most recent long-distance trip was this summer vacation, all the way from Mohe to Sanya, I crossed most of China. China is a magical country. The more I approached her and saw every place scattered in the country, the more I was amazed at her boundlessness and rich beauty.
But speaking of it, my favorite city is Xuzhou. I have long lived here as my second hometown. Many people think Xuzhou is very ordinary, but to me everything is familiar and kind, especially here on campus. Everyone I know makes me feel warm and a sense of belonging. My hometown, Edinburgh, is a city known as a “museum”. There are old buildings everywhere, full of retro flavor, but Xuzhou looks more vibrant. In the past five years, many neighborhoods have been renewed, just like the epitome of the Chinese economy, which is amazing.

Kim Byung Joon, South Korea, Teacher at Xuzhou University of Technology
Kim Byung Joon, 34 years old, Korean. In 2008, he was sent to China by the education department for the first time as a student representative of Incheon University. That short journey made him firm his “Chinese Dream”. In 2009, he came to China alone. After traveling a considerable part of the cities in China, he finally chose to settle in Xuzhou.
Kim Byung Joon received a master’s degree in economics from China University of Mining and Technology in 2014. He has developed fluent Chinese in just a few years in Xuzhou. He then worked as a foreign teacher at Xuzhou Institute of Technology. On August 1, 2010, Kim Byung Joon established the “Xuzhou Story” website to introduce Xuzhou, a city with profound historical and cultural heritage, specifically for Koreans. So far, more and more Koreans have learned about Xuzhou through him. The “Xuzhou Story” has also become a bridge for the Koreans in Xu and even Jiangsu to communicate with the Chinese and make friends, and it has also become the first window for foreign companies with investment intentions to understand Xuzhou. For example, the Korean company Kyungshin contacted Kim Byung Joon through the “Xuzhou Story”, and with his assistance, he investigated and observed the investment environment in Xuzhou. The Papa John Corporation in the United States also investigated Xuzhou through the “Xuzhou Story” Supervision of branches. At the same time, Korean universities such as Ewha Womans University, University of Economics, Seoul Women’s University have also contacted Kim Byung Joon through the “Xuzhou Story”, hoping to establish a good exchange and learning relationship with Chinese high schools.
During the Xuzhou International Conference some time ago, Kim Byung Joon invited many South Korean entrepreneurs and celebrities to Xuzhou to participate in the conference, including the head of Hanaro News Agency in South Korea. He said that people in Xuzhou are very hospitable, and they are called brothers after a drink. He feels a lot of warmth here.
The current Kim Byung Joon is already a Xuzhou expert. Here are the people, things and things he is interested in, his work, his lover, his warm home, and his “daughter” Mu Mu—— He adopted a pet, a rabbit that was almost four years old. Jin Junjun said that he was very happy to give Mumu a warm home, and also very happy that he could become his family in Xuzhou.
