Shijiazhuang Expats – Living in Shijiazhuang

Mike Livingston, Canada

Mr. Mike Livingston, 28, is a Canadian. He has been in Shijiazhuang for two years and now teaches at Hebei Institute of Information Engineering. He felt the tremendous changes in this city in just two years. “I came to Shijiazhuang in 2004. Shijiazhuang has become greener day by day, streets have become more spacious, and large shopping malls have been established. My first impression of Shijiazhuang is that the city is developing rapidly, and it is becoming A big city.” Shijiazhuang is located in the central and southern part of Hebei Province. It is one of the important intersections of China’s railway and highway main lines, occupying a very important geographical location. The developing Shijiazhuang has attracted the attention of many people, and Mike, who has traveled all over China’s big cities, finally stopped here. What kind of unique charm does this city have? Mike said: “I’ve been to many Chinese cities, such as Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, etc. Each city is different. Shijiazhuang is very unique. It does not have such a long history as Beijing and Xi’an. She is a new city. It used to be a village. I came here to feel the history of China’s growth.” Mike made a lot of friends here. When Mike needs to go shopping, his landlord will always tell him where there are shops and how to go. When he encounters a problem he cannot solve, his neighbors will take the initiative to help him. When he fell ill, friends accompanied him to the hospital. Chinese friends also taught Mike to learn Chinese and asked him to be a guest at home. Mike and his Chinese friends spent a lot of wonderful time and forged a deep friendship.

Osu, Chad

Osu from Chad is a master of economics. He has been teaching at a university in Shijiazhuang for 3 years. He also settled his family of four here. Shijiazhuang’s comfortable and convenient life and warm and friendly people made him fall in love with this place deeply.

“Why choose Shijiazhuang? Because the climate here is nice, the people are friendly and helpful. It is very close to Beijing, but Beijing is a big city. It is better to have Shijiazhuang smaller and smaller cities. Many problems are easier to solve here. That’s why I decided to stay.”

Velma, UK

The British teacher Velma Sullivan has been in Shijiazhuang for 11 years and she has witnessed the development and growth of Shijiazhuang.

“When I first came to Shijiazhuang, it was not what it is now. There are no parks or golf courses around, but farmland. I have been here for 11 years and have been watching Shijiazhuang develop and grow.”

Velma Sullivan told reporters that she has a very good Chinese friend in Shijiazhuang, and the two have been in friendship for 11 years. She often visits friends’ houses. They often chat together and go shopping together. Every time Velma talked about their friendship, he was always excited.

In September 2006, Velma won the 2006 “Friendship Award” for Experts in China. This is selected by the China Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs from 300,000 foreign experts each year. Wilma is also the first cultural and educational expert in Hebei Province to receive the “Friendship Award”. Velma, who received the “Friendship Award”, was very excited. She said: “The Friendship Award given to me by China is the highest award. I am very grateful. At the same time, I would also like to thank Shijiazhuang Foreign Language School for assisting me for more than ten years!”
