Introduction to Zhengzhou University of Aeronautics

Zhengzhou University of Aeronautics (郑州航空工业管理学院, website) is a full-time ordinary institution of higher learning. It was founded in 1949 as the Financial School of Pingyuan Province. After several changes of its name and site, it was renamed as Zhengzhou School of Aeronautical Industry in 1964 when the 16 aeronautical schools in China were readjusted and merged. Then it changed its name again in 1978 into Zhengzhou College of Aeronautical Industry Management and in 1984 into Zhengzhou Institute of Aeronautical Industry Management (undergraduate), which acquired the authority to confer bachelor’s degree in 1989. In 1999, the University, which had been previously affiliated with AviationIndustry Corporation of China, began to be under the joint jurisdiction of both central and local government, with its daily operation being administered by Henan Provincial Government. In 2013, it obtained authority to confer master’s degree approved by the 30thmeeting of the State Council’s Academic Committee, pushing ZUA’s overall performance to a new height.

Adhering to its motto of Being strict, pragmatic, pioneering and enterprising, the university has been exploring a model for talents cultivation that can both meet the needs of the local economy and the development of aeronautical industry over the past 6 decades. Now it has formed its own talent cultivation style of highlighting the discipline of management with a combination of management and polytechnics, and established its strong competitiveness in the fields of aeronautical industry management and technology application research. With notable advantages in the discipline of management and coordinated development of various disciplines, it serves as an important base, producing application-oriented interdisciplinary talents.

The well-established facilities for teaching, research, living and physical education provide sound conditions for the university’s further development. Currently, the University has three campuses: East campus, South campus and North campus, covering a floor area of over1900 muand a building area of over 970,000 square meters, with its asset value totaling RMB1billion. It boasts of 35 teaching and research laboratory centers such as Management Engineering Laboratory Center, Accounting Laboratory Center as well as Information Technology Laboratory center, etc.. Among them, Ceramic Material Interface Lab, Aeronautical Logistics Lab and Lab of Pavement Material with High Water Permeability are listed as the Provincial Engineering Labs in Henan Province. Aeronautical Material and Engineering Technology Lab are listed as the bases of nursing key labs in universities of Henan Province. Aeronautical Manufacturing and Equipment Research Center, High Performance Civil Engineering Materials Research Center and Environment Engineering Technology Research Center are listed as the provincial research center on engineering in universities of Henan Province. It also has a School of Software, 66 undergraduate majors as well as 8 junior college majors. Among them, the majors of accounting, industrial engineering and auditing as well as electric engineering and automation are listed as special majors at the state level while the majors of archives, project management, human resources management, marketing, statistics, information management and information system, financial management, machinery design, manufacturing and automation are listed as special majors at the provincial level. The university’s five teaching teams in accounting, industrial engineering, economics, financial management and archives are listed as the Teaching Teams of Universities in Henan Province. Its 4 experimental teaching centers in management engineering, accounting, material engineering and electromechanical engineering are listed as the Demonstration Centers for Experimental Teaching in Henan Province. Industrial engineering, accounting and economics are among the pilot projects of Henan Province in comprehensive reform of majors. Management science and engineering, business management, library information and archive management have been identified as the Key Disciplines under the Grade 1 Disciplines of the Province, while mechanical engineering and automation, material science, structural engineering as well as regional economics as the Key Disciplines under the Grade 2 Disciplines of the Province.

Zhengzhou University of Aeronautics attaches great attention to the development of its teaching staff who are becoming increasingly competitive as a result of intensified efforts to cultivate and introduce teachers. Currently, it has 900 full-time teachers, of whom 400 are professors or associate professors. One is the candidate of the “National Talent Project”. 3 are “Outstanding Talents of the New Century” honored by the Ministry of Education. 11 are among the specialists receiving the Government Allowances from the State Council. 5 are Excellent Teachers at the national level. 5 are specialists or academic leaders at the Provincial level and 89 are academic and technological leaders or key teachers honored by the Education Department of Henan Province. It also has many distinguished part-time professors, including 5 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering such as Guo Chongqing and Zhang Yanzhong, and nearly 100 well-known experts from home and abroad such as Guo Daoyang, Qi Ershi and Bi Qiang. 3 of its teaching staff are recruited as doctoral tutors and 52 are recruited as postgraduate tutors by some other universities.

The university has established its own philosophy of putting moral education in the first place and taking teaching as the central task while giving top priority to the quality and morality of its students. It always upholds its own feature of “combining management science with engineering” and puts emphasis on arousing students’ awareness of innovation. Thanks to these efforts, it has improved the quality of its students and produced more than 120,000 talents of various kinds for different sectors of the country, the national defense industry in particular, thus becoming an important incubator of talents in aeronautical industry, management, and technology.

Currently, there are more than 28,000 full-time students in the university, who have won over 100 prizes above the provincial level at such national contests as Mathematical Contest in Modeling, English Contest for College Students and Industrial Design Contest, and some students’ activities like “the Challenge Cup”. Moreover, the university has been given the honor of “Advanced Collective in Social Practice for College Students” at the state or provincial level for years. And the employment rate of its graduates has also been kept above 95% over the past years, taking the lead among the universities in Henan Province.
