Introduction to Yantai University
Yantai University (website) faces the Yellow Sea on the east and the green mountains on the west. With its beautiful scenery and pleasant climate, Yantai University is closer to the ocean than any other national university, and it also has the longest coastline.
Yantai University was established in July 1984. With the approval of the Ministry of Education, Peking and Tsinghua universities jointly sent elite teachers specialized in teaching, research and management to assist in its long-term plan of development. The Developmental Committee, assisted by Peking and Tsinghua universities, was established in 1990. In order to ensure a higher starting point and to encourage rapid development, the committee regularly discussed and guided Yantai University’s teaching, research, curriculum development, and reform.
Centered on teaching with a focus on the instructors, as well as on the students, Yantai University has placed great emphasis on curriculum development and research and has made great progress in achieving quality education. Withthe ideal of integrating the sciences, engineering, and the humanities, Yantai University has consistently strived to improve its educational standards in order to ensure the continuous development of its teaching quality.
In 1995, Yantai University successfully passed the Undergraduate Teaching Qualifications Evaluation from the National Education Commission. In 1998, Yantai University was granted the Master Degree Conferral Right; and in 2004, the university was given the Award of Excellence during the Undergraduate Teaching Qualifications Evaluation organized by the Ministry of Education. In 2007, Yantai University was entrusted with and selected as the Training Unit for Military Officers by the General Political Department of PLA. In 2012, the university became one of first provincial universities to enter into the“Prominent University Project”. At the present time, Yantai University is entitled to admit students at the doctoral, master, bachelor, and associate levels, as well as to grant the corresponding degrees.
Yantai University consists of 21 schools and colleges, 46 research centers, and 56 undergraduate majors covering up to ten curriculums, including Liberal Arts, Science, Engineering, Law, Agriculture, Medicine, Economics, Management, Education, and Art. At present, there are 28,000students enrolled including baccalaureate and associate degree students, as well as graduate and foreign students. The students who are studying at the baccalaureate level are from 31 different provinces and regions. Moreover, Yantai University covers an area of 1.4 million square meters,with a total building floor space of 935, 000 square meters and a library of 43,800 square meters. The total value of the teaching equipment amounts to 240 million yuan.
Message from the Leadership
Yantai University was established in 1984 and is one of the key provincial comprehensive universities of Shandong Province. The creation and development of YTU was made possible by the generous donations and continuing assistance of the people of Yantai and Weihai, and of many overseas Chinese entrepreneurs. Two of the most renowned institutions of higher education in China, Peking University and Tsinghua University, were instrumental in the creation of Yantai University, and the fine traditions of these two universities have been carried forward over the past twenty-five years. We scrupulously abide by the school’s motto of “Be trustworthy, be down-to-earth, be fond of learning, and practice earnestly.” We put great emphasis on innovative teaching and learning. We have a well-developed set of academic disciplines covering the breadth of higher education. Many of our departments have outstanding features that distinguish them from similar disciplines at other universities. Our undergraduate educational system is broad and well-founded. Post-graduate education at YTU has developed very quickly in recent years. Significant achievements in research have been made by our faculty and alumni. We have made many scholarly contributions to society. Yantai University has become an influential comprehensive university, both in China and in the world.
Since its beginnings Yantai University has attached great importance to international exchange and cooperation, and was one of the first group of universities permitted by the central government to recruit foreign educational experts and receive international students. YTU has established partnerships with over seventy universities and institutions around the world, including cooperative programs with Republic of Korea and Norway. Now we receive about six hundred international students every year.

About Yantai
Yantai (
Panorama), in the middle of Shandong Peninsular, around 200 kilometers away from Qingdao, is one of the most famous coastal cities in China. It is bordered by both the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea, and lies across from South Korea and Japan.?Its population was 6,968,202 during the 2010 census.
Like Qingdao, Yantai is an increasingly popular summer destination among both Chinese and foreigne tourists, thanks of course to its sunny and soft beaches. Unlike the beaches of Qingdao, Yantai’s beaches are very relaxed and less crowded.
In 2004, China Central Television (CCTV) recognized Yantai as the most “Charming City of China.” Although Yantai is not a metropolis like Beijing and Shanghai, it has its own unique charm. Adding to the draw of local natural resources, the picturesque scenery in and around the city has earned the area acclaim by the United Nations, which lists it as one of the most habitable places in the world. Undulating hills rise above the area’s many rivers, and are framed by beaches and neighboring islands.

Transportation
Yantai is easily accessible from Jinan and Qingdao with frequent trains daily and a high speed train to Qingdao. Yantai Penglai International Airport provides scheduled flights to major airports in China as well as Seoul, Osaka, and Hong Kong
Food
Local food here is well-known all around China. Local cooks take advantage of area’s abundant sea food, vegetables and fruits, creatively crafting tasty dishes. Yantai is also the cradle of wine production in China, housing the largest wine production base in Asia. Yantai is the cradle of Chinese wine production, being home to the largest wine production base in all of Asia. The internationally recognized wine brand, Changyu, produced in Yantai, has thrust Yantai onto the world wine stage, as it were; Yantai has become as beloved a name to lovers of Chinese wines as is Bordeaux to lovers of French wines.
