Introduction to University of Science and Technology of China

The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is a comprehensive national key university with a focus on cutting-edge science and high technology, and a combination of medicine, specialty management and humanities.

Founded in Beijing in September 1958, the first principal was also served by Guo Moruo. Her founding was called “a major event in the history of education and science in China.” After the founding of the school, the Chinese Academy of Sciences implemented the policy of “running the school and combining the schools”. University of Science and Technology of China closely focused on the newly-developed science and technology fields in the country, and creatively combined science and engineering with cutting-edge science and high technology. Focus on basic course teaching, high-starting, wide-caliber training of cutting-edge science and technology talents in emerging, marginal and interdisciplinary fields, bringing together some of the most prestigious scientists in China, such as Yan Jici, Hua Luogeng, Qian Xuesen, Zhao Zhongyu, Guo Yonghuai, Zhao Jiuzhang and Bei Shizhen. The school was listed as a national key university in the second year.

At the beginning of 1970, University of Science and Technology of China moved to Hefei City, Anhui Province, and started its second venture. After 1978, the school was determined to reform and boldly innovate. It was the first in the country to propose and implement a series of educational reform measures with innovative spirit and forward-looking awareness. It established a junior class, a first graduate school, a national science project, and an open university. Wait, so that the school can be restored and developed rapidly. The school is one of the first universities in the country to implement the “985 Project” and “211 Project”, and is the only university to participate in the national knowledge innovation project. The distinctive features combined with practice have cultivated a large number of high-level talents with both ability and political integrity. The school faces the world’s scientific frontier fields and major national needs, condenses scientific goals, conducts scientific research, strives to improve academic research level, scientific research innovation capability and scientific research competitiveness, and has achieved a number of original scientific and technological achievements with world-leading levels. At the new historical starting point, the school has accelerated the construction of world-class universities with Chinese characteristics and the style of the University. In the country’s “double-class” construction, it has been selected as a world-class university in the A class.

University of Science and Technology of China has 20 colleges (including 6 science and education integration and co-construction colleges), 31 departments, and graduate schools, as well as Suzhou Research Institute, Shanghai Research Institute, Beijing Research Institute, Advanced Technology Research Institute, and the University of Science and Technology of China. National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at Microscale, State Key Laboratory of Fire Science, State Key Laboratory of Nuclear Detection and Nuclear Electronics, National Engineering Laboratory for Brain-like Intelligence Technology and Applications, Voice and Language Information Handling national engineering laboratories, quantum information and quantum technology frontier collaborative innovation center, National High Performance Computing Center (Hefei), Anhui Mengcheng Geophysical National Field Science Research and Research Station, 12 national scientific research institutions, 4 national key science and technology foundations Facilities and 55 key provincial and ministerial research institutions.
