Taiyuan University of Science and Technology (太原科技大学, website) is the first undergraduate college of heavy machinery in New China. It is a multi-disciplinary university with distinctive characteristics in running schools. It is also an important personnel training and technology research and development base in China’s major technology and equipment fields. In 1952, Taiyuan University of Science and Technology, the predecessor of the Shanxi Provincial Machinery Manufacturing Industry School, was established. Mr. Zhi Bingyuan, the founder of modern China’s machinery industry and a pioneer in China’s internal combustion engine development, became the principal. In 1953, the school was placed under the Central Ministry of Machinery Industry. In 1955, Changchun Automobile School and Hankou Machine Manufacturing School merged in forging and punching. In 1960 it was renamed Taiyuan Heavy Machinery College. In 1965, Dalian Institute of Technology and Shenyang Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering were merged into the field of lifting and conveying machinery. In 1998, it was changed to be co-constructed by the provincial and ministerial departments, and mainly under provincial management. In 2004 it was renamed Taiyuan University of Science and Technology.

Taiyuan University of Science and Technology currently has 61 undergraduate majors, including 1 national-level comprehensive reform pilot major, 5 national-level specialty major construction sites, 7 provincial-level specialty majors, 6 provincial-level specialty majors, and provincial-level majors.
