Suzhou Art and Design Technology Institute (苏州工艺美术职业技术学院) is the first higher vocational college of art and design established in China. It was formerly known as the “Suzhou Art and Craft College” founded in August 1958. In 1999, Suzhou Arts and Crafts School and Suzhou Light Industry Workers College jointly established the Suzhou Arts and Crafts Vocational and Technical College, which became the first independent vocational college of art and design in China. In 2006, the school obtained excellent results in the assessment of the talent training level of higher vocational colleges. In 2007, it became the first batch of “Jiangsu Province Model Higher Vocational Colleges”. In 2010, it was determined to be a “National Model Higher Vocational College Construction Plan” project to build colleges. In 2014, the school’s national backbone college construction project won the “excellent” level in the acceptance of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance. In 2018, it won the construction unit of high-level vocational colleges in Jiangsu Province. In 2019, the school was successfully selected as a high-level vocational school with Chinese characteristics and a professional construction plan construction unit. The school has been rated as “Top 50 in educating people”, “Top 50 in contributing to society”, “Top 50 in international influence”, “Top 50 in comprehensive student satisfaction”, etc. in the national vocational colleges and universities, ranking “Wu Shulian 2019 China Higher Vocational College The top category of arts and culture is “No. 1”.
Suzhou Art and Design Technology Institute is located on the shore of Shihu in the ancient Wu resort. The school campus covers an area of 561 acres, with a building area of nearly 200,000 square meters. It has more than 400 faculty members and more than 5,000 students. There are seven secondary colleges including the School of Handicraft Art, the School of Fine Arts, the School of Visual Communication, the School of Environmental Art, the School of Fashion Design, the School of Industrial Design, and the School of Digital Arts. The direction of small specialization has formed a professional structure in which multiple subjects are integrated, with a focus on traditional arts and crafts and modern art design.
The school has national key construction vocational teacher training bases for the Ministry of Education, non-genetic inheritance training bases for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and national women’s handicraft training demonstration bases. There are also the Ministry of Education’s base for the transmission of outstanding traditional Chinese culture, the continuing education base for Jiangsu arts and crafts technicians, and the Suzhou Taohuawu Woodcut New Year Painting Agency (Research Institute). The school is the deputy director unit of the Art and Design Professional Teaching Steering Committee of the vocational colleges of the Ministry of Education, and the director of the plane vision special committee of the Art and Design professional teaching steering committee of the vocational colleges of the Ministry of Education. The school training center has a building area of 45,800 square meters, and has 97 studios, including 4 national training bases, 8 provincial training bases, and 1 provincial experimental teaching demonstration center.
Suzhou Art and Design Technology Institute is committed to the protection and inheritance of Suzhou traditional culture and folk crafts, and has pushed the inheritance and development of the intangible cultural heritage Suzhou Taohuawu Woodcut New Year Pictures to a new stage. Carrying cultural mission and embodying responsibility. Through the “Arts and Crafts Inheritance and Innovation Experimental Zone” and other platforms, the intangible heritage of Taohuawu Woodcut New Year Pictures, Su Xiu, and Leishan Miao Nationality was excavated, inherited and developed. The school was named as the first batch of “Jiangsu Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Base”; it presided over the construction of the “Hundred Workers: Non-Inheritance and Innovation of Chinese Arts and Crafts” national vocational education professional teaching resource database. At present, the school has a total of 141 school-enterprise cooperation units and 24 enterprises.
While actively absorbing advanced western culture, the school spreads Chinese culture and exports traditional crafts and art design education paradigms through exchanges and cooperation with foreign art and design colleges and cultural academic institutions. There is a “Sino-French Jiangsu Art Design Education Research Center” jointly established by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education and the Paris Education Bureau in France, and a “Sino-British Suzhou Art Design Education Innovation Center” jointly established by the school and the University of Southampton. There are four workstations in France, the Netherlands, Austria, and the United Kingdom. At present, it has established cooperative relations with 78 universities in 28 countries, including France, Britain, Japan, Canada, the United States, and the Netherlands. China’s overseas tour project of Chinese craftsmanship and the excellent works of teachers and students of the school are implemented, and about 200 short-term and long-term international students are trained each year.
Suzhou Art and Design Technology Institute has achieved outstanding results in talent training, and the enrollment and employment situation is booming. It recruits students from 30 provinces and cities nationwide. The annual enrollment scale is about 1,800. The employment rate of graduates has continuously maintained above 98%. The satisfaction rate of enterprises has reached 98%. A large number of graduates have started their own businesses. The school has won many honors such as the “Cradle for High-skilled Talents” awarded by the Jiangsu Provincial Government, “Jiangsu Education International Cooperation and Exchange Advanced School”, “Jiangsu Advanced Graduate Employment Work Collective” and “Suzhou High-skilled Talent Training Outstanding Contribution Award”.
