Introduction to Southern Medical University
Southern Medical University (南方医科大学, website), formerly known as the First Military Medical University of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, was founded in 1951 and was identified as a national key university in 1979. It was transferred to Guangdong Province in August 2004 and renamed Southern Medical University. The school is the only medical school among the key universities in Guangdong’s high-level universities. It is the first batch of universities in the country and the only “ministries and provinces” in Guangdong province to jointly build universities. One of the 8 colleges and universities in the country, the first batch of pilot universities for outstanding doctor education training programs.
Southern Medical University recruits students from 31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities and Hong Kong and Macao regions. There are currently 19 teaching institutions with 35 undergraduate majors, including 7 national specialty majors, 10 Guangdong specialty majors, 6 Guangdong famous majors, 13380 full-time undergraduates, 5249 graduate students, and 1032 international students. The annual enrollment ratio of undergraduate and graduate students is 1.71: 1, and the scale of doctoral enrollment ranks second among independent medical schools nationwide, and ranks third among all universities in Guangdong.
Southern Medical University currently has 10 first-level disciplines authorized by doctorates and 6 post-doctoral mobile stations, of which the number of first-level disciplines authorized by medical doctorates ranks second in independent medical colleges and universities nationwide. It has 5 national key and cultivating disciplines, and 5 disciplines have been shortlisted in the top 1% of ESI globally, and the overall ranking ranks 3rd in the province and 61st in the country.
Southern Medical University is one of the 13 universities in the country that pilots eight-year medical education. It is also the only independent medical university that provides eight-year medical education. It has established friendly cooperative relations with 54 universities and research institutions in 20 countries and regions. It has won 10 national teaching achievement awards and 27 provincial teaching achievement awards. In recent years, three academicians from Hou Fanfan, Xia Zhaofan, and Sun Yinghao have emerged among undergraduate graduates. In the national qualification examination for medical practitioners, the highest pass rate in clinical medicine ranked 4th in the country, and TCM ranked 3rd in the country. In 2017, undergraduates won the first prize in the National Clinical Skills Competition; In the competition, the number of gold awards in the entrepreneurial plan category ranked first in the province’s universities, and the only university in Guangdong Province that has won gold awards for five consecutive sessions. In the fifteenth “Challenge Cup” extra-curricular academic science and technology works competition, the total score of the group ranked first in the province of medicine and third in the country, and it has entered the ranks of nationally initiated universities for two consecutive sessions. According to the “China Graduate Education and Discipline Professional Evaluation Report” issued by the China Scientific Evaluation Research Center, our university ranked 79th in the country in terms of competitiveness in graduate education in 2018, ranking 4th in independent medical colleges.
Southern Medical University currently has 147 national talents and 332 provincial talents, including 3 academicians, 3 dual-employed academicians, 3 national teaching teams, 4 national teaching teachers, 13 national high-level talents, and Yangtze River scholars. There are 10 people, 14 national elites, 9 national special support plans, 13 national candidates for the “Billion Talent Project”, 4 young and middle-aged leaders in science and technology innovation of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and 7 national “You Qing” talents.
Southern Medical University now has 38 national, provincial and ministerial laboratories and 43 national, provincial and ministerial research centers (institute), including national key laboratories, national clinical medical research centers, national science education bases, and national and international scientific and technological cooperation. The base and the national innovative talents training demonstration base are each one. There are 75 provincial and ministerial key scientific research platforms; they have won 17 second prizes of national scientific and technological achievements and 49 first prizes of provincial and ministerial scientific and technological achievements. The total number of awards ranks first in provincial universities. In 2015, they were awarded the National Natural Science Foundation for Innovation Research Group projects, breaking the zero-year situation of innovative group projects in the medical field in Guangdong universities for 10 years. In 2018, it was awarded 254 National Natural Science Funds, ranking second in the number of medical universities in China, and ranked among the top 30 universities in China for 3 consecutive years. The SCI papers published in 2018 ranked 58th in universities nationwide. As of June 2017, the school has 475 valid invention patents, ranking first in independent medical institutions in the country.
Southern Medical University currently has 11 directly affiliated hospitals with 10,575 beds and nearly 11 million visits per year. It has 17 national key clinical specialties, 60 Guangdong key clinical specialties, and 12 Guangdong Medical Quality Control Centers. Nanfang Hospital Affiliated to Guangdong Province’s High-level Hospital Construction “Ascent Plan”, and its comprehensive strength ranked 17th in Fudan’s 2017 Chinese Hospital Rankings, of which the “research and academic” strength ranked 11th in the country.
