Introduction to South Central Minzu University
South-Central University for Nationalities (SCUN, 中南民族大学, website) is a comprehensive university under the direct administrationof the State Ethnic Affairs Commission. It is located onthe shore of South Lake in Wuhan, a city known as “the home of white clouds andyellow cranes”.Founded in 1951 as South-Central College for Nationalities, theuniversity andwas renamed as South-Central University for Nationalities in March 2002. Sinceits establishment, SCUN has always been committed tofollowing the socialist path of education, implementing the party’s educationpolicy and ethnic policy, adhering to the combination of the laws of party’sethnic work and the laws of higher education as well as the combination of thespeciality of higher education of nationalities and the universality of generalhigher education, adopting to the general laws of higher education as well asrespecting the speciality of higher education of nationalities, and makinggreat efforts to explore the new path of running a university fornationalities. The past decades have witnessed the rapid overall development inthe university.
The universityowns a campus ofmore than 1,550 mu (one mu=666.66 m2)with a construction area ofmore than 1 million square meters. The library has a collection of 6.97 millionvolumes of books. The Ethnology Museum on campus is the first of its kind inuniversities in China. The campus is beautiful all theyear round with greens trees, beautiful flowers and buildings in picturesquedisorder reflecting strong ethnic architectural features. The landscape of lakes and mountainscomplements the cultural landscape and constitutes an ideal place for study,research and living.
The universitynow has over 27,000 full-time preparatory students, undergraduates, Master’sand PhD students from all 56 ethnic groups in China.The students come from 31 provinces (cities, autonomousregions)among which the university enrolls studentsqualified for “first-tier universities” in National College Entrance Examination in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Shanxi,Jiangsu, Shanghai, Hebei and Hubei. Henan, Shandong, Guangxi, Tibet, Yunnan,Ningxia, Anhui, Hunan, Jiangxi, Chongqing, Sichuan, Gansu, Hainan, Guizhou, andZhejiang provinces (regions). Students from minorityethnic groups make up 60 percent of the total.The university currently has 2114faculty and staff, among which 1375 are professional teachers. Among thosefull-time teachers, there are more than 750 technical staff possessing seniorprofessional titles, 1 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholarswinner as well as the Chief Scientist of the “973 Plan”, 46 National andProvincial Talents Project candidates, 48 experts with Government SpecialAllowance by State Council and Hubei Provincial Government, 25 experts withOutstanding Contributions at National, Provincial and Ministerial levels, 22Chutian Scholars, 22 second-grade professors. 50.91 percent of the teacherspossess doctor’s degrees. At present, a well-developed contingent of teacherswhich is sufficient in quantity, well-structured and high in quality isgradually developing in the university.
The university always adheres to the mission of Being oriented towards minority ethnic groups, ethnic-minorityareas, localities and the whole country, serving minority ethnic groups andethnic-minority areas, serving the ethnic work of the party and state, servingthe strategic needs of the country. The university now provides84 undergraduate programs in 10 disciplines, and has 2 doctoral programs offirst-level disciplines in Ethnology and Chinese Language and Literature,post-doctoral studies center, 24 academic master’s programs of first-leveldisciplines, 16 professional master’s programs. The master’s programs cover all 12 disciplines exceptmilitary science, including philosophy, economics, law, pedagogies, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medical sciences, management, arts, etc. The university currently has 9 first-level key disciplines at the provincial and ministerial-level, twofirst-level key construction disciplines and four second-level key disciplines.The university has 5 national level characteristic specialties, 7 provincial-level brand specialties,40 national and provincial-level quality courses, 13 national and provincialexperimental teaching demonstration centers, and 39 provincial andministerial-level scientific research institutions (laboratories, bases, centers),The total valueof the experiment and teaching equipment worth more than RMB 300 million.
The universityis the “national first-class construction university” in Hubei Province. Thedisciplines of Ethnology, Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences are enlisted inthe “national first-class construction disciplines” in Hubei Province. In 2008, theuniversity was entitled to recommend excellent undergraduates excused fromexamination to study for Master’s degree. During the 12th Five-YearPlan period, the university undertook 316 national-level projects,amongwhich there were 169 national natural science fund projects and 129 nationalsocial science fund projects; , undertook 379 crosswise tasks,signed 244 pieces of technology contracts with enterprises, published 309academic monographs, granted 122 patent rights, published 5613 academic papersamong which 1443 papers are indexed by CSSCI (including 90 authoritativejournal articles), 1041 papers are indexed by SCI, 1112 papers are indexed byEI, won 144 awards at provincial and ministerial levels; 2 research papers werecommented by the party and state leadership; 26 research reports were adoptedby governments; 7 motions were awarded political consultation award by the provincialgovernment.The university has always attached a great deal of importance toenhancing and cultivating students’ all-round development and innovationability, and encourages students from all ethnic groups to work hard and workwell in an all-around way with the inspiration of the university motto of “Be anaturally easy-going person with serious belief and knowledge” They have spread all over the countryand made positive contributions to maintaining ethnicsolidarity andstability and promoting the economic and social development of ethnicminorities and ethnic minority areas.
With the deepening of education reformand opening up, the university has accelerated the pace of exchange and cooperation with universities overseas. Currently, theuniversity hasestablished exchange and collaborative relationships with more than 50 universities indozens of countries (regions) such as the United States, Britain, France,Ukraine, Australia, Canada, Russia, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan,Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Thailand and Laos. In 2008, incollaboration with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, the twoinstitutions jointly established a Confucius Institute at the University ofWisconsin-Platteville. The university regularly sendsoutstanding undergraduates and graduates abroad to participate in exchangestudy in partner universities, sends faculty abroad to give lectures, engage inadvanced studies and conduct research, and also invites foreign experts toteach and collaborate in research projects on campus, which expands itsacademic influence to the world.
In recent years, the development of theuniversity has improved in quality and speed. In 2001, theuniversity was awarded excellent by the Ministry of Education after the dynamicevaluation of undergraduate education. In 2002, it was renamed as South-Central University for Nationalities.In September 2003, the university became a jointly-constructionuniversity by theState Ethnic Affairs Commission and Wuhan Municipal People’s Government. In May2005, it was awarded as “National Model for EthnicUnity and Progress”by the State Council.In2006; it was awarded excellentby the Ministry of Education after the dynamic evaluation of undergraduateeducation. In2008, the university was awarded as civilized unit bythe State Ethnic Affairs Commission. In 2009, it was awarded as “NationalAdvanced Unit in Employment of Graduates from Colleges and Universities”. In 2010, it won the third prize in “Campus Culture Construction Competition” by the Ministry of Education.In2015, itbecame a jointly-construction university by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission,the Ministry of Education and Hubei Province. In 2015, the Chemistry program entered the top 1% of the global ESI ranking; In 2017, the Ethnology discipline ranked third in the country in the fourth round of nationaldiscipline evaluation. Since 2001, the university hassuccessively been awarded “Best Civilization Unit (Campus)” by Hubei ProvincialGovernment for8 times in 16 consecutive years.
