Introduction to Pu’er University

Pu’er University (普洱学院, website) is located on the southwestern border of the motherland, and is located in the Pu’er City, a hub city on the Kunman International Corridor. The predecessor of Pu’er College is Simao Teachers College, which was started in 1977 and officially enrolled in October 1978. It is one of the first four colleges to be established in Yunnan Province. In April 1998, the Yunnan Provincial Radio and TV University Simao Branch was incorporated into the system. In September of the same year, the school’s management system was adjusted to “province and co-manage with the province as the main province.” On March 29, 2012, the Ministry of Education agreed to establish Pu’er College on the basis of Simao Teachers College. In August 2014, Pu’er College was approved as the first batch of pilot universities in Yunnan Province to transform into an applied technology university. In September 2014, it was approved by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the State Forestry Administration as the first batch of pilot project units for the reform of education programs for outstanding agricultural and forestry talents. In 2015, it was listed as a national university construction project university by Yunnan Province.

Pu’er University currently has 12,505 full-time students and 305 international students. There are 521 teaching staff and 477 full-time teachers (excluding external teachers). The campus covers an area of more than 2,000 acres; the total value of teaching and research equipment is 47.44 million yuan; the paper collection is 850,000 volumes, and the electronic literature is over 300,000 volumes (as of December 31, 2017); the provincial journal “Journal of Pu’er College” . There are 30 fixed internship schools and more than 30 off-site internship training bases, including 4 provincial-level internship training bases. Over the past 30 years, the college has trained 30,000 graduates and contributed to the local economic development.

In the 41-year course of running a school, Pu’er University has gradually formed certain school-running characteristics: First, it cooperates with the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to cultivate local economic development, horticulture, garden technology, and forest resource cultivation applications required for green development Secondly, relying on Pu’er’s out-of-print woodcutting advantages to form the characteristics of the fine arts specialty; thirdly, relying on geographical advantages, open schools to recruit international students, exchange and cooperate with Chiang Rai Royal University of Thailand and Lao National University to cultivate Thai and Lao Professionals.
