Introduction to Nankai University
Nankai University (南开大学, website) is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education. It started in 1904 and was established in 1919. The campus was blown up by the invading Japanese troops in 1937, and the school moved south. Southwest United University was formed in 1938 with Peking University and Tsinghua University.
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Nankai University has become a national key university with equal emphasis on arts and sciences. Since the reform and opening up, Tianjin Institute of Foreign Trade and China Academy of Tourism Management have been incorporated one after another. With the support of the Ministry of Education and Tianjin, the school has developed into a comprehensive research university focused on the “211 Project” and “985 Project”. After the completion of the new campus in September 2015, three campuses were formed: Balitai Campus, Jinnan Campus, and TEDA College. In September 2017, Nankai University was selected as one of the 36 world-class universities in 42 national top-ranking universities.
It covers an area of 4,451,900 square meters, of which the Balitai campus covers 1,225,500 square meters, the Jinnan campus covers 2,459,900 square meters, and TEDA College covers an area of 67,200 square meters. The total building area of the school building is 1,197,600 square meters. In accordance with the principle of “independent school running and close cooperation”, the school is fully cooperating with Tianjin University.
Nankai University is one of the comprehensive and research universities with a complete range of domestic disciplines. In the process of running a school for a long time, it has formed a school with the characteristics of both science and art, a broad foundation, and outstanding application and innovation. There are 26 professional colleges covering disciplines such as literature, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, teaching, and art.
Nankai University has 86 undergraduate majors (including 18 national specialty majors). There are 30 first-level disciplines authorized by doctoral degrees, 12 first-level disciplines authorized by master’s degrees, 25 authorized master’s degree programs, 1 second-level doctoral programs not covered by first-level disciplines, and 28 post-doctoral research stations. There are 5 national “double first-class” construction disciplines, 6 first-level disciplines and 6 national key disciplines (covering 35 second-level disciplines), 9 second-level disciplines and 9 national first-level disciplines and Tianjin key disciplines.

Nankai University is both a teaching center and a scientific research center, and has achieved a number of outstanding results recognized at home and abroad. From 2008 to 2017, Nankai University’s SCI papers have been cited by a total of 13,069 papers, with a total of 246,598 citations, ranking 16th; each article has been cited 18.87 times, and it has been cited more frequently throughout the country. Of universities ranked first.
Nankai University has a wide international influence. The university has established cooperation and exchange relationships with more than 320 internationally renowned universities and international academic institutions. The University has built 9 overseas Confucius Institutes, including the Confucius Institute at the University of Maryland, and was awarded the “Advanced Chinese Cooperative College of Confucius Institute” twice in 2012 and 2015. The school has undertaken the task of national Chinese language education and training, and launched a number of high-level overseas study programs such as the Oxford / Cambridge Summer Program.
