Introduction to Nanchang University

Nanchang University (南昌大学, NanDa) is a national university situated in Nanchang, the provincial capital city of Jiangxi province, which is located on the south of the Yangtze River. It is one of the two best universities in Jiangxi Province; the other one is Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics. Jiangxi is famous as the home of porcelain (china). Nanchang university dates from Jiangxi Public Medical College and National Chung-cheng University, which were founded in 1921 and 1940 respectively. Later on, Jiangxi University merged with Jiangxi Industrial University to set up Nanchang University in 1993, which created a precedent for the reform of the national higher education system. In 1997, Nanchang University was listed as one of the national key universities of the “211 project”, which is a joint cooperation project of the People’s Government of Jiangxi Province and the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China.

Over the years, the central government, the Ministry of Education, and Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government have attached significant important to the construction and development of Nanchang University. The State Councilor Liu Yandong expects Nanchang University to be a world-class university with Chinese characteristics.

Nanchang University is surrounded by stunning natural beauty, designed as an ideal place for study and research. It consists of five campuses: Qian-Hu Main campus; Qingshan-Hu; Dong-Hu; Poyang-Hu and Fuzhou campus. And it has the whole area of more than 534 hectares. Its main campus is located at Qian-Hu, Nanchang and it occupies an area of 300 hectares and is the campus where all the undergraduate student, the majority of graduate students, most research institutes and labs and most faculty and staff are based. Currently, NCU has 36,936 full-time undergraduates, 13,621 graduates, and around 800 international students.

NCU has 13 affiliated hospitals of different ranks and categories, among which there are six national top tertiary general hospitals and one top tertiary stomatological hospital.

NCU has a disciplinary system featured by coordinated development of art, science, medicine and engineering. It, currently, runs 100 undergraduate programs covering 12 disciplines, eight disciplines and 64 sub-disciplines which confer PhD degrees, 45 disciplines which confer master degrees, eight post-doctoral research stations, eight academic doctoral degree disciplines of first-level, one professional doctoral program, 15 professional master programs and equivalent master programs for part-time postgraduates. In addition, NCU boasts 1 national key laboratory, 1 national engineering technology research center, 2 national key disciplines, 1 national key discipline under cultivation, 2 key laboratories of Ministry of Education, 2 engineering centers of Ministry of Education, 1 key humanity and social science research base of Ministry of Education, 3 innovation teams of Ministry of Education, 1 national clinical pharmacology base, 5 national clinical specialty, 1 branch of National Stem Cell Engineering Technology Research Center. It boasts three state experiment teaching modelling centres, 9 featured specialities, one teaching group, two quality curriculums, 1 modelling bilingual teaching curriculum, five provincial high-standard disciplines and two high-standard laboratories, one high-standard engineering (technology) research centre, 16 provincial key disciplines and six modelling master programs of the twelfth five-year plan.

NCU Faculty

NCU has a total faculty of 4624, among which 1556 (occupies approximately 45.68%) are professors and associate professors, 853 (approximately 25.58%)have Ph. D degrees, 2105 (approximately 70.7%) have a master, or above degrees, 214 are part-time doctors of high-level domestic and overseas universities or research institutions. NCU currently has 4 Dual-Employed Academicians, 1 foreign academician, 4 recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 5 members of Yangtze Scholars Scheme, 1 member of Discipline Evaluation Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, 5 National Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions, 1 outstanding expert selected by Ministry of Health, 1 National Prominent Teacher, 2 winners of Bethune Award, 5 members of first and second level of the National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project, 3 persons listed in the National Thousand Talents Project, 10 members of New Century Excellent Talents Support Project, 4 exclusively employed members of Jinggang Scholars Project, 93 recipients of special allowances provided by State Council and provincial government.

NCU adheres to the concept of depending on talents cultivation, integrating education and research, absorbing all resources and pursuing the supreme good to promote the practice. It sticks to the education philosophy of admiration of morality and competence and integration of knowledge and practice. NCU has formed an initial diversified talents cultivation system based on promoting quality education. It seeks a cultivation mode of pioneering, innovative talents with cross-disciplinary backgrounds. NCU boasts 11,573 postgraduates of all kinds and 67,503 full-time undergraduate and 3-year students (with the main campus accommodating 37,328 undergraduates). NCU is among the first universities of College Innovation Experiments Project and the first experimental universities of Excellent Engineers Cultivation Project.

International Cooperation

NCU earnestly promotes international exchange and cooperation. It has maintained stable exchanges and cooperative relationships with about 60 universities and institutions in over 30 countries and regions. The Confucius Institute constructed by NCU was selected as an excellent institute by Confucius Institute Headquarters for three consecutive years. NCU plays a leading role in promoting regional culture and has made great efforts to push forward brand-culture construction and innovation. It has established art associations like Nanchang Philharmonic Orchestra and Jiangxi Opera Art Research Center. NCU held the 29th International Music Education Conference.

School of Foreign Languages

The School of Foreign Languages (website) was established in 1998. There are 200 faculty members and 174 teachers, including ten professors and 58 associate professors. There are 28 doctoral degree holders, 126 master’s degree holders, 17 master’s tutors, and three foreign visiting professors. They employ English and Japanese. 13 foreign teachers in German, French, Spanish and Russian.

The school consists of the Department of English Language and Literature, the Department of Asian and European Languages and Literature, and the Department of Foreign Languages. There are seven undergraduate majors in English, Translation, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, and Russian. At present, there are 1,236 full-time students in the school, including 1144 undergraduates and 92 postgraduates.

The school has complete teaching and research facilities and has domestic first-class language experiment facilities. The school has a language experiment centre jointly managed by the school. The language experiment centre was awarded the Jiangxi University Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center in July 2008. The Language Experiment Center has six independent foreign language learning rooms with a total of 514 computers. It has a wealth of foreign language learning resources. In 2015, the independent study room opened 7680 class hours. The school has 41 language rooms and 2410 seats. It is responsible for the teaching of foreign language listening and speaking experiments for the whole school. The total number of open experiments is 640,000 people per year. The school has 4 English radio stations, one professional library and literature room, 37,445 books in the data room, and 71 Chinese and foreign academic journals.

The Ministry of Education Examination Center Business English Test, TOEFL iBT, GRE test, IELTS test, Japanese language proficiency test, Korean language proficiency test, Nanchang University test centre, etc. are located in the School of Foreign Languages.

The school is committed to enhancing international exchanges and cooperation and has established cooperative and exchange relations with universities in Japan, France, Germany, Spain, Russia, etc. Each year, students are selected to study abroad, conduct internships and practical activities, and the process of internationalization of education are further accelerated.

Foreign Teachers

Currently NCU has a total number of 47 foreign professors and teachers. The School of Foreign Languages employs 13 foreign guest professors and on-campus foreign teachers specialized in English, Japanese, German, and French.
