Introduction to Minjiang University

Minjiang University (MJU, website) is a general full-time university of higher learning run by the People’s Government of Fujian Province, which was legally approved by the Ministry of Education in 2002. It carries out an educational system which is co-run by the principal and municipal governments but is based on the latter. Minjiang University is now one of the first batches of pilot universities for the education of master degree postgraduates on the basis of serving the special national needs. It is not only a master degree education organization in Fujian but also a pilot school in the province moving towards the application mode. The university is a merger of the original Fuzhou Teachers’ College (founded in 1958) and the original Minjiang Vocational University (established in 1984).

The General Secretary, Mr Jinping Xi was President of the original Minjiang Vocational University during his tenure as Party Secretary of Fuzhou Municipal Committee of Chinese Communist Party. The education philosophy of ‘Seeking not the biggest, but the excellent, but the most adaptable to the social demands’, as well as the objective ‘To base on Fuzhou, orient to market, focus on quality and highlight application’, which President Xi put forward for Minjiang in those years have now become Minjiang’s guiding ideology of running the university.

Situated in Fuzhou, Fujian province, with four campuses in the University Town, on Gong Ye Road, in Hong Tang and in Shou Shan respectively, the university has a total area of 161.84 hectares, 580,800 square meters of school building area and 290,800 square meters of teaching and administration buildings. The total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is now 214 million RMB. The university provides 3.0094 million collections of books (e-books included). Now in Minjiang University, there are over 20,000 full-time students from 18 different colleges (faculties), which are School of Humanities and Communication, the Mathematics Department, the Department of Foreign Languages, the Department of Physics and Electronic Information Engineering, the Department of Computer Science, the Tourism Department, College of Economy and Management, College of Clothing and Art Engineering, Academy of Fine Arts, the Department of Geographical Science, the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the Department of Law, Cai Jikun Music College, New Huadu Business School, the IEN International College, College of Software, Strait College, and College of Further Education.

The university has the first national MBA program in the fields of entrepreneurship and innovation, 8 key disciplines of Provincial level, three of which are first-level ones and five second-level. It offers 50 undergraduate programs, covering the fields of economics, law, languages, history, science, engineering, management and arts.
There are six big professional groups that the university has cultivated and developed, which are Textile and Garment, the Creative Design of Lacquer Art Culture, Cross-border E-commerce, Surveying and Mapping Geographic Information, Functional Fiber Materials, and Information Technology and Intelligent Applications. The university has also constructed some specialties and courses of both the national and provincial levels. On the former level, there are the two characteristic specialties, one comprehensive reform pilot project for university undergraduate courses, one quality course, and one resource sharing quality course; and on the latter level, there are the three characteristic specialties, seven characteristic specialties for service industry, six comprehensive reform pilot projects for university undergraduate courses, eighteen quality courses, three teaching teams, six experimental areas for personnel training mode innovation, five experimental platforms for basic course teaching, five off-campus undergraduate educational practice bases, seven experimental teaching demonstration centers, and one virtual simulation experimental teaching demonstration center.

At present, there are over 1100 full-time teachers in the university, 516 of which have senior professional titles (with 120 professors), and 930 of which have master’s degrees or higher (with 282 doctor’s degree teachers). The university boasts three experts who enjoy the special government allowance from the State Council, one ‘New Century Excellent Talent’ selected by the Ministry of Education, one ‘Changjiang Scholar’, one member of the textile professional teaching committee of higher education of the Ministry of Education; seven ‘Min Scholars’, six ‘Key Talents of Fujian’, eighteen ‘Fujian New Century Excellent Talents in Universities’, seventeen ‘Outstanding Young Scientific Talents in Institutions of Higher Learning’, and five ‘Teaching Masters’ of provincial level.

The university has established several scientific and technological innovation platforms, two of which are of the provincial level, eight of the university level, and 5 of the municipal level. There is also one university scientific and technological innovation team. The university has always been active in serving the local cultural construction and economic and social development. The agreements of scientific and technological development and cooperation have been signed with the county and city governments in Changle, Luoyuan, Minhou, Fuqing, Jinjiang, Yongtai and Xianyou, with the establishment of twenty-five school-locality and school-enterprise cooperation research organizations. As a result, 281 cooperation programs have been carried out on crosswise project research and development in the past few years, forming distinguishing features in such research fields as Fujian folk culture research, Min capital folk customs and culture research, lacquer art, textile and garment technology, urban and rural planning, chemical coatings, internet development, entrepreneurship and innovation. Minjiang University’s young International Lacquer artist incubation base has been selected to the provincial and municipal maker space. The ‘Cause Lacquer’ on the basis of school-enterprise cooperation was the only authorized bodiless lacquer art class in the first National Youth Games, enabling a successful launch to the market. The other school-enterprise cooperation research and development achievement, by the name of ‘The Industrialization of Pearl Pigment with Flaky Alumina Substrate’, has broken the technology monopoly of German Merck KGaA, filling the blank in domestic market.

The university has established cooperation relationship of counterpart assistance with Renmin University of China and Fuzhou University. With the promotion of personnel training cooperation and personnel exchanges with Taiwan’s Fujen Catholic University, Chinese Culture Minjiang University has become one of the universities in Fujian and even in the mainland with the largest number of students studying in Taiwan, covering the biggest number of specialties, and with the most frequent communication between teachers. There are also various forms of exchanges and cooperation with colleges and universities in Australia, Canada, America and Switzerland. Min-Taiwan cooperation as well as China and foreign joint mode of training applied talents have gained social acceptance, making the school the biggest batch delivery of oversea students among Fujian colleges and universities. Besides, Minjiang University has established the Confucius Institute of Brock University in Canada.

During the 13th Five Year Plan, the university will adhere to the basic principle of ‘Morality Education’; abide by its education philosophy of ‘Seeking not the biggest, but the excellent, but the most adaptable to the social demands’, as well as its objective ‘To base on Fuzhou, orient to market, and focus on quality and highlight application’. It will continue to thoroughly apply ‘Several Opinions from Fuzhou People’s Government on Giving Support to Minjiang University for a Comprehensive Improvement in Managerial Level’, in order to strengthen its connotation construction, to reinforce the comprehensive strength, and to lay a solid foundation for the building of Minjiang University into a well-known comprehensive and applied university in the southeast region.

Food

Fuzhou cuisine is something you cannot miss. As one of China’s eight major cuisines, Fuzhou dishes are light but flavorful, with particular emphasison retaining the natural flavor of the main ingredient. The most famous one is “fotiaoqiang”,literally translated as Buddha jumps over the wall. With a special way of cooking,the dish is widely known for its rich taste and usage of various high-qualityingredients, including shark fins, sea cucumber and abalone. The dish’s name isan allusion to the dish’s terrific flavor to entice the monks to come out fromtheir temples to partake in the meat-based dish. Another famous delicacy iscalled rouyan. Its main ingredient is lean pork, which is pounded and smashedinto meat paste, mixed with some starch, then stretched into a thin sheet,which is used to wrap stuffing of minced meat.

Weather

The weather of Fuzhou is comfortable, affording tourists the opportunity to visit the city all the year round, especially between April and November. Fuzhou is also liable to typhoons in late summer and early autumn. The monthly 24-hour average temperature ranges from 10.9 °C (51.6 °F) in January to 28.9 °C (84.0 °F) in July, while the annual mean is 19.84 °C (67.7 °F).
