About the City
Ji’an (Panorama) is a prefecture-level city situated in the central region of Jiangxi province of the People’s Republic of China. It has a population of 4.8 million of whom about 0.5 million live in the built-up area made of 2 urban districts. Ji’an lies next to the Luoxiao Mountains with the Gan River running through the middle of the city. The mountainous terrain and large forest coverage of Ji’an has made it one of the greeneest area in southern China.
Like the cuisines of its neighbour provinces, Jiangxi cuisine favours overtly spicy tastes. In many regions in Jiangxi, chili peppers are directly used as vegetables instead of ingredients to enhance flavour. Jiangxi cuisine is famous for its freshwater fish banquets due to Jiangxi’s geographical location, as there are many freshwater zones in the province. Fried tofu is usually served during Chinese New Year celebrations.
Jiangxi is the main area of concentration of the Gan varieties of Chinese, spoken over most of the northern two-thirds of the province. The southern one-third of the province speaks Hakka. Ganju (Jiangxi opera) is the type of Chinese opera performed in Jiangxi. Jingdezhen is widely regarded as the producer of the best porcelain in China. Jiangxi also was a historical center of Chan Buddhism. Prominent examples of Hakka architecture can be found in Jiangxi. Jiangxi is one of the ancient tea-producing areas. The Black Tea produced in Ningzhou City and the Green Tea produced in Wuyuan City are well-known throughout the country.
