Introduction to Inner Mongolia University

Inner Mongolia University (IMU) is located in Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and a famous historical and cultural city, more than 400 kilometers from Beijing, and is the first comprehensive university founded by the Party and the State in an ethnic minority region after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The university was founded in 1957 from a high starting point, with Wu Lanfu, then Vice Premier of the State Council and Chairman of the Autonomous Region, as the first president (1956-1968), Yu Beichen, former Deputy Director of the Department of Comprehensive Universities of the Ministry of Higher Education, as the vice president, and Mr. Li Ji Dong, a member of the Academic Department of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a famous biologist, a first-class professor of Peking University and a doctor of Yale University, as the academic vice president. The Party and the government selected a group of famous discipline leaders and academic backbone from Peking University and other famous universities in China to form a high-level faculty at the early stage of the university, bringing with them the long-established tradition of governance and the noble university spirit, which laid a solid foundation for the subsequent development of the university and its excellent academic style.

In 1962, the university admitted graduate students, and in 1978, it was recognized as a national key university, and in 1984, it was granted the right to confer doctoral degrees. In 2012, it was selected as one of the universities in the national “Comprehensive Strength Enhancement Plan for Universities in Central and Western China” (“one province, one university”), in 2016, it was selected as one of the universities in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to support the construction of first-class universities, and in 2017, it was selected as one of the national universities for the construction of first-class disciplines. In 2017, it was selected as a national first-class discipline construction university, and in 2018, it became a university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the People’s Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

Institutions and disciplines: The university consists of the main campus, College of Transportation, Manzhouli College, and one independent college – College of Entrepreneurship. There are 21 colleges in the main campus.

The university has 11 disciplines, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, management and art, and has 2 national key disciplines of Chinese minority languages and literature and zoology, and 1 national key cultivation discipline of ecology. There are 12 primary disciplines and 1 secondary discipline authorized for doctoral degree, 23 primary disciplines and 2 secondary disciplines authorized for master’s degree, 15 professional degrees authorized for master’s degree, and 8 postdoctoral research stations. Biology has been selected as one of the “double first-class” disciplines in China, and Biology, Ecology, Chemistry, Ethnology, Chinese Language and Literature (Mongolian Language and Literature) and Chinese History have been selected as “double first-class” disciplines in the autonomous region.

The university is approved by the Ministry of Education as a national innovative experiment program for college students, an innovation and entrepreneurship training program and the first batch of demonstration colleges and universities in China to deepen the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education. There are now 95 undergraduate majors, 130 undergraduate teaching laboratories and 97 on-campus and off-campus teaching practice training bases. There are 4 national bases for basic science research and teaching talents training, 1 national base for cultural quality education of college students, 1 national base for cultivating excellent grassroots legal talents in western China, 1 national pilot project for comprehensive reform of majors, 2 national experimental zones for innovation of talent training mode, 8 national specialties, 16 national construction points for first-class undergraduate majors, 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 national off-campus practice education bases, 6 national quality courses, 3 national quality resource sharing courses, 7 national quality video open courses, 2 national bilingual teaching demonstration courses, 1 national brand course of English for students studying in China, 1 national online first-class undergraduate course, 5 national offline first-class undergraduate courses, 1 national social practice first-class undergraduate course, and 4 national teaching teams. 4 national teaching teams. Talent Cultivation: There are 27,300 students in the university. Among them, 15,834 are undergraduates, 812 are doctoral students, 6,741 are master students, 13,744 are undergraduates, 812 are doctoral students, 6,491 are master students and 450 are international students. Among the students, about 30% of them are of Mongolian, Daur, Ewenk and Oroqen ethnic minorities. Scientific Research: There are 1 State Key Laboratory of Grassland Livestock Reproduction Control and Breeding, 1 National Joint Engineering Research Center of Mongolian Intelligent Information Processing Technology, and other key research bases of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, and engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education in the fields of Mongolian studies, ethnology, biology, ecology, chemistry, etc. There are 13 key research platforms (10 in science and technology and 3 in humanities and social sciences) and 42 key laboratories, engineering and technology research centers and key research bases of humanities and social sciences in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (32 in science and technology and 10 in humanities and social sciences). Since the 18th CPC National Congress, the university has completed 546 national and ministry research projects in science and technology, 606 new projects have been approved, and 68 national major projects in natural science such as the National Key Research and Development Program and the National Science and Technology Support Program have been hosted or undertaken. We have completed 805 scientific research projects in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and 867 new projects have been approved. Social Services: The university has significantly improved its ability to serve local development, and has made a number of achievements in the fields of modern agriculture and animal husbandry, ecological environment construction, innovation and breeding of grassland livestock germplasm resources, energy and new materials, mineral resources utilization, biomedicine, food safety, new generation information technology, integrated development of cultural tourism industry, and strategic decision-making and consulting, which have produced important economic, social and ecological benefits. The “Grassland Livestock Germplasm Innovation and Breeding Base” was built to comprehensively promote the research and development of innovative breeding technology for cattle and sheep, and improve the ability of the autonomous region to protect, innovate and utilize grassland livestock germplasm resources and breed good breeds; the improvement and industrialization of the biotechnology system for cattle and sheep breeding and the technical system of intelligent herding cloud service were realized, and a new model of ecological breeding for cattle, sheep and camels was established. Support In recent years, the university has focused on serving the “Belt and Road” initiative and the construction of the “China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor” by establishing the “Mongolia Research Center” and the “China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Research Institute”. In 2017, the university was selected as the director of the “Belt and Road” Think Tank Cooperation Alliance, and the Center for Mongolian Studies and the Center for Mongolian Studies were listed in the China Think Tank Index. The Center for Mongolian Studies and the Center for Mongolian Studies have been selected as the source think tanks of China Think Tank Index (CTTI).

International Exchange and Cooperation: The university has established exchange and cooperation with 106 universities and research institutions in China and abroad, and the international cooperation and exchange between faculty and students has been expanding and deepening. The university has set up the Sino-US Research Center for Ecology, Energy and Sustainability Science in Inner Mongolia in cooperation with Arizona State University, the Sino-Japanese Research Center for GIS Application and Regional Economic Industry in cooperation with Aichi University, and the Sino-British Enterprise Digital Lab in cooperation with the University of Warwick. The university has a center for Mongolian studies, a center for Russian language and culture, a center for Canadian studies, a center for Japanese studies, a center for Australian studies, a center for American studies, a window for Sino-Japanese exchange in Hohhot, and a Confucius Institute in cooperation with Kalmyk State University in Russia. The university is one of the first national model bases for studying in China approved by the Ministry of Education, a base for Mongolian students’ preparatory Chinese education in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and an examination center for the New Chinese Proficiency Test for International Students of the State Hanban, and a university that accepts Chinese government scholarships, international Chinese teachers’ scholarships and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region government scholarships for international students. The university has a College of International Education, which receives nearly 700 international students from 26 countries, including Mongolia, Russia, Korea, Japan, Laos, Thailand, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, India, Pakistan, Ukraine, Luxembourg, England, Spain, Nigeria, Rwanda, Togo, etc. from four continents: Asia, Europe, America and Africa.

Conditions: The university covers an area of 4058.18 mu, with a construction area of 884,200 square meters and a total value of 1.216 billion yuan for teaching and research instruments and equipment. Among them, the main campus covers an area of 2108.18 mu, with a construction area of 738,900 square meters, and the total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment is 1.156 billion yuan. The library is one of the 16 initiators of the Mongolian Literature Information Center of the Ministry of Education, the Science and Technology Research Station of the Ministry of Education, the national patent literature service network, the B-level member library of CALIS (China Higher Education Literature Assurance System) Joint Catalog Project, the provincial central library, and the China University Institutional Knowledge Base Alliance (CHAIR). The university has 3,526,600 printed volumes (3,107,200 volumes in the main campus), 109 Chinese and foreign language databases, 747,800 electronic books and 76,100 full-text electronic journals. The campus network covers the whole area of teaching and research, office and living services, and the campus network center is the main node of China Education and Research Network (CERNET) and the next-generation Internet (CNGI-CERNET2) in Inner Mongolia.
