Introduction to Hunan University
Hunan University is located in Changsha, a famous historical and cultural city in China. Its campus is located at the Bank of Xiangjiang River and the foot of Yuelu Mountain. It enjoys the reputation of “a thousand year university, a hundred year famous university”. The university has a long history of running schools and excellent educational traditions. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of education, a national key construction University of “211 Project”, “985 Project” and a national construction University of “world class university”.
Hunan University originated from Yuelu Academy, which was founded in 976 A.D. after the changes of song, yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, it has always maintained the continuity of culture, education and teaching. In 1903, it was restructured into Hunan University, named Hunan University in 1926, and became one of the 16 national universities of the Ministry of education of the national government in 1937. After the founding of the people’s Republic of China, Li Da, a representative of the first National Congress of the Communist Party of China and educator, was the first president of Hunan University in New China, and Comrade Mao Zedong personally wrote the name of the University. In 2000, Hunan University and Hunan University of Finance and economics merged to form a new Hunan University.
In the long-term course of running the school, the school has inherited and carried forward the fine tradition of “preaching for the people, patriotism and pragmatism, being practical and inclusive”, accumulated the Hu university spirit with the school motto of “seeking truth from facts, daring to be the first”, the school ethos of “erudition, wisdom, diligence and knowledge”, and established the overall goal of talent cultivation of “solid foundation, broad vision and both ability and morality”. It has formed the school running characteristics of traditional culture education and strengthening practical teaching, and cultivated a large number of “solid foundation, active thinking, strong adaptability and high comprehensive quality” senior professionals for the country and society. Many graduates have grown into famous experts and scholars, outstanding entrepreneurs and excellent party and government management talents. 39 of the teachers and students have been elected as members of the “School Department” and “two academies” ”Academician. The university has more than 36000 full-time students, including more than 20000 undergraduates and more than 15000 postgraduates. The initial employment rate of graduates has been kept above 95%.
The university has graduate school and 25 colleges, covering 11 disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, medicine and art. It has 27 first-class disciplines authorized by doctor’s degree, 1 doctor’s degree, 36 first-class disciplines authorized by master’s degree, 20 master’s degree authorization, 60 undergraduate enrollment disciplines, 2 first-class disciplines of national key disciplines, 14 second-class disciplines of national key disciplines, and 25 post doctoral research flow stations. At present, 7 disciplines are in the top 1% of ESI, among which engineering and chemistry disciplines are in the top 1 ‰, 7 disciplines are selected into national defense characteristic disciplines, and chemistry and mechanical engineering disciplines are in the construction ranks of “world-class construction disciplines” of the Ministry of education.
At present, the university has nearly 4000 faculty members, including 2045 full-time teachers, 1428 professors and associate professors, 12 academicians, 6 members of the discipline evaluation group of the academic degree committee of the State Council, 51 scholars of the “thousand talents plan”, 20 scholars of the “ten thousand talents plan” (including 3 famous teachers), 3 national famous teachers awards, 18 specially appointed professors, lecture professors and young scholars of “Changjiang Scholars” There are 21 winners of the outstanding youth fund. 23 people have been selected in the national talent project, 2 young and middle-aged innovation leaders in the national innovation talent promotion plan, and 134 people in the new century excellent talent support plan of the Ministry of education. It has 4 “innovation research groups” of NSFC and 8 innovation teams of the Ministry of education.
The university has been approved to build national engineering (Chemistry) basic course teaching base, National Science (Chemistry) basic science research and teaching talents training base, national demonstration software college teaching base, National College Students’ cultural quality education base, national innovation and entrepreneurship education reform demonstration University, national innovation and entrepreneurship typical experience university, and national university practice education innovation and entrepreneurship base. It has 7 national teaching teams, 6 bilingual teaching demonstration courses, 6 talent training model innovation experimental areas, 4 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 5 national pilot specialties of excellence program, 3 off campus practice bases for national college students, and 1 National virtual simulation experimental teaching center. In recent years, the school has won 2 first prizes and 7 second prizes of national teaching achievement awards, 10 national excellent video open courses, 21 national excellent resource sharing courses and 13 national excellent online open courses.
The university has 2 national key laboratories, 2 national engineering technology research centers, 3 national level international cooperation bases, 1 National Engineering Laboratory, 1 national defense key discipline laboratory of the State Administration of science and technology of national defense, 5 key laboratories of the Ministry of education, 4 engineering technology research centers of the Ministry of Education, 3 discipline innovation and intelligence introduction bases of institutions of higher learning of the Ministry of education, and participated in the establishment of the national “2011 collaborative innovation” 3 centers.
The university has established a national university science and Technology Park and a “two mountains and one lake” innovation and entrepreneurship base. It has established a production, learning and research base in the “Lugu” of Changsha high tech Zone, including 56 high-level production, learning and research platforms for universities, local enterprises, and 32 provinces (cities, districts) and thousands of enterprises. The National Supercomputing (Changsha) center operated and managed by the university is the third National Supercomputing Center, providing high-performance computing, cloud computing and big data processing services for hundreds of user units such as universities, scientific research institutions, governments, enterprises and institutions.
The university has established cooperation and exchange relations with more than 160 universities and scientific research institutions in the world, recruited various types of international students from 108 countries and regions, and established overseas practice bases for students. Nearly 2000 students went to cooperative colleges and universities for exchange study or joint training. Confucius institutes were established in the United States, Canada and South Korea.
The campus covers an area of 1531960 square meters, and the building area of the school buildings is 124056 square meters. By the end of 2018, the university has a collection of 7.28877 million books and 127 databases in Chinese and foreign languages. The whole network supports the next generation Internet IPv6. The 10 Gigabit backbone ground wired and wireless network has covered all teaching buildings, office buildings and student apartments. Combined with mobile technology, it has realized multi-channel information-based teaching, management and service.
