Introduction to Henan University of Science and Technology
Henan University of Science and Technology (河南科技大学, website), abbreviated as HAUST, is located in Luoyang, the “Millennium Imperial Capital and Peony City” and the deputy center of the Central Plains City Cluster. It is a university jointly built by the National Defense Science and Technology Administration and the People’s Government of Henan Province, a university supported by the National Midwest University Infrastructure Construction Project, a national demonstration university for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, a national base for continuing education of professionals and technicians, and the first batch of bases for transformation of scientific and technological achievements and technology transfer in higher education institutions under the Ministry of Education.
The university was founded in Beijing in 1952. In the middle of 1950s, the university was moved to Luoyang for the layout of national industrial base construction, and then renamed as Luoyang Engineering College, which was subordinated to the Ministry of Machinery Industry. In 2002, Henan University of Science and Technology was established by merging Luoyang Engineering College, Luoyang Medical College and Luoyang Agricultural College. Premier Li Keqiang (then governor of Henan Provincial People’s Government) personally awarded the school a plaque, and pointed out that “the establishment of Henan University of Science and Technology is a major initiative of the provincial party committee and the provincial government to implement the strategy of ‘science and education in Henan’ …… Henan University of Science and Technology to create a high level university as the goal, to become a domestic advanced, in the forefront of the province’s universities, with its own characteristics of a comprehensive university”.
For a long time, HAUST has been adhering to the school motto of “Mingde and erudition, and the philosophy of “educating people and academic excellence”, and carrying forward the spirit of “self-improvement and pursuit of excellence”. With the spirit of “self-improvement and the pursuit of excellence”, the university has developed into a high-level comprehensive university with outstanding advantages in engineering and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as science, agriculture, medicine and literature, highlighting internal development and focusing on improving the quality of talent cultivation and core competitiveness. It is ranked 98th in China and 3rd in Henan universities in the 2020 China University Rankings published by Arenashen China Alumni Association; it is ranked 120th in mainland universities and 3rd in Henan universities in the 2018 World University Rankings published by Scimago, an American journal information analysis platform.
HAUST has four campuses: Kaiyuan, Xiyuan, Jinghua and Zhoushan. There are 41,000 full-time undergraduates, graduate students and international students, and 24,000 part-time adult education students. The university covers 11 disciplines, including science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, literature, law, history, education and art, and has 31 colleges with 97 undergraduate majors, of which 20 majors have been selected as national and local “first-class undergraduate” majors, and 14 undergraduate majors have been approved as “Excellent Engineers, Excellent Doctors, Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talents, Excellent Undergraduates”. 14 undergraduate majors have been approved as “Excellent Engineers, Excellent Doctors, Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talents and Excellent Legal Talents Training Program”. The university has 4 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degree, 3 national “13th Five-Year Plan” national defense specialties, 28 first-level key disciplines in Henan Province, and 3 post-doctoral stations; 38 first-level disciplines authorized for master’s degree, and 12 professional degree graduate enrollment categories. Three disciplines, namely engineering, agricultural science and clinical medicine, have been ranked in the top 1% of the global ESI.
HAUST has 15 national and provincial specialty construction points, 13 pilot projects of comprehensive professional reform, 57 national and provincial quality demonstration courses, and 11 majors have passed professional evaluation and engineering education accreditation site visits. There are 1,032 professors, associate professors and other senior professional and technical personnel, 1,200 teachers with doctoral degrees, 7 double-appointed academicians, national scholars, “100 million talents project” inductees, “Changjiang scholars and innovation team development plan” of the Ministry of Education, etc. There are 7 double-appointed academicians, 17 national scholars, selected members of the “Ten Million Talents Project”, “Yangtze River Scholars and Innovation Team Development Program” of the Ministry of Education, etc., and 80 chief scientists of the Central Plains Scholars and Scientists Studio, Central Plains Scholars, Central Plains Famous Teachers, Provincial Specially Appointed Professors and Provincial Academic and Technical Leaders.
The university has 78 national and provincial (ministry) key laboratories, engineering technology (research) centers, research bases and academician workstations, 3 provincial and provincial collaborative innovation centers, and 12 special professors in Henan Province. In the past five years, the university has undertaken 70 projects of national major special projects and national key R&D programs, and more than 450 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Social Science Foundation of China; it has won 6 national science and technology awards and 167 provincial (ministerial) science and technology progress awards and outstanding social science achievements awards.
HAUST is one of the first universities recognized by the Ministry of Education to receive foreign students, and cooperates and exchanges with more than 200 high-level universities and research institutions in the United States, Britain, Russia, Canada, Australia and other countries, enrolling undergraduate students, graduate students and language students from 21 countries. There are 10 affiliated hospitals, among which the First Affiliated Hospital is one of the first “Top 100 Hospitals” in China with 3,600 beds.
The university has been vigorously carrying out innovation and entrepreneurship education and practice activities, and has won the “Internet+” Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, “Challenge Cup” Student Extra-curricular Academic Science and Technology Competition, “Youth Creation” Student Entrepreneurship Competition and other national science and technology innovation competitions. The university has won excellent results in national science and technology innovation competitions, such as the “Internet+” Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, “Challenge Cup” Student Extra-curricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition and “Youth Creation” Student Entrepreneurship Competition. In the China “Internet+” Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, it was ranked 17th in the national universities, 88th in the ranking of national university academic competitions and 37th in the ranking of national local undergraduate universities. Nearly 300,000 senior professionals have been trained and delivered to the country and society, and the bearing industry has been identified as the only university for talent training and technology reliance, known as the bearing industry’s “Whampoa Military Academy”.
In the long-term construction and development of the school, always facing the main battlefield of economic and social development, with a unique geographical advantage, industry advantages, professional advantages as a solid foundation, give full play to the advantages of science and technology in mechanical equipment manufacturing, metal materials, new materials, bearings, gears, new energy vehicles, information technology, robotics, agricultural engineering, health care, etc., in the cooperation between industry, academia and research to develop themselves, and contribute to the society. In the evaluation of the level of undergraduate teaching work of the Ministry of Education, the project of University-Industry-Research Cooperation was selected as one of the 100 cases of national colleges and universities with characteristics of school operation.
Standing on a new historical starting point, Henan University of Science and Technology will deeply implement the general requirement of “building moral and educating people” of General Secretary Xi Jinping, and remember the earnest request of Premier Li Keqiang for the development of the university, with the goal of building “a high-level comprehensive university with its own characteristics and advanced in China”. We will strive to build a university for students, a university for scholars, a university for academics, and a university with a first-class academic style, so as to successfully complete the tasks entrusted to us by the Party and the people. We will make a new and greater contribution to building a well-off society, writing a gorgeous chapter of the Central Plains and realizing the “Chinese dream” of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation!
