Introduction to Hebei University
As a key comprehensive university, Hebei University (HBU) is co-constructed by Ministry of Education, the People’s Government of Hebei Province and State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense of PRC. It is also one of the first-level universities participating in China’s construction plan of national first-class university and world-class disciplines, with strong support from the Hebei Provincial Government.
The university was originally founded by French Jesuits as Tianjin Technology and Business University in 1921, located at No.141, Machang Road, Tianjin. It was renamed as Tianjin Technology and Business College in 1933 due to its small scale. In 1948, it was registered as Jingu University with 10 departments of 3 colleges. In 1951, the university was approved by the Central People’s Government to be a public one, which ushered in a new era under the leadership of Tianjin Municipal Government and founded another 3 departments. Then the Central People’s Government decided to adjust the layout and departments of universities in 1952. The Technology Department of Jingu University was incorporated into Tianjin University, while the Finance and Economics Department into Nankai University. Besides, Tianjin Normal College was established on the basis of Normal Educational Department and its departments were increased from 6 to 9 in a few years. In 1958, it expanded into Tianjin Normal University, then being identified as one of five key universities in the province. In 1960, this university was upgraded to a comprehensive one and received the name of Hebei University, which was relocated in 1970 from Tianjin to a well-known historical and cultural city-Baoding in Hebei Province. The Technology Supervision School of Hebei Province and Hebei Medical Staff College as well as its affiliated hospital were incorporated into Hebei University in 2000 and 2005 respectively.
Campus
Covering an area of approximately 162 hectares, the university is consisted of the Main Campus, the New Campus and the Medical School, with the construction area of 1.29 million square meters. The total value of fixed assets is 3.1 billion RMB. There are 27 secondary colleges, 15 first-level disciplines authorized to offer doctoral degrees, 46 first-level disciplines authorized to award master degrees, 26 disciplines authorized to offer professional master degrees, 11 disciplines authorized to offer master degrees of engineering, and 94 undergraduate programs. As one of the universities with most completed discipline fields across China, it embraces 12 major specialties including philosophy, economics, law, pedagogy, literature, history, science, engineering, agronomy, medicine, management and art. There is also an independent college–Industrial and Commercial College, Hebei University, with 59 undergraduate programs.
Currently, there are approximately 82,000 registered students, including over 5800 full-time doctoral candidates and postgraduates, about 25,000 full-time undergraduates and college students, more than 10,000 students enrolled in Industrial and Commercial College, and over 40,000 students receiving adult education. Besides, HBU owns 3248 faculty members, among whom 1912 are full-time teachers, 50.73% hold doctorate degrees and 90.17% have master’s degrees. There are 57 state-level talents who are academicians of two academies, Chang Jiang Scholars, winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, members of the state’s Thousands Talents Program or Ten Thousand Talents Program, winners of National Teaching Master, national candidates of New Century Talents Project, National Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions or State Council Special Allowance Experts. There are also 316 provincial-ministerial specialists with the title of Yanzhao Scholars or Provincial Outstanding Experts.
HBU boasts remarkable ability in education, with 1 national key discipline, 3 world-class disciplines of Hebei Province under construction, 4 national first-class disciplines of Hebei Province under construction, 3 national key disciplines of Hebei Province under cultivation, 4 characteristic disciplines and 18 key disciplines of Hebei Province, 7 postdoctoral research stations and 1 postdoctoral research center. It is equipped with 17 National Joint Engineering Research Center, Provincial and Ministerial Key Laboratories (base) and engineering laboratories, 16 Key Research Institutes (center) of Humanities and Social Sciences at provincial and ministerial-level including those of the Ministry of Education, 4 Hebei 2011 Collaborative Innovation Centers, and 2 key laboratories co-founded with state-owned enterprises. Apart from that, there are 14 state-level Quality Engineering Projects including Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers and characteristic specialties, 11 national Undergraduate Teaching Projects covering professional comprehensive reform pilots, outstanding talents training plans and undergraduate educational practice bases, as well as 112 provincial undergraduate teaching reform projects to improve teaching quality. The university is also the National Cultural Quality Education Base, Further Educational Base for professional and technical personnel and Yan’an Spirit Educational Base.
With an open mind, HBU has established cooperative ties with over 100 high-level universities across the world. It has set up the HBU-UClan School of Media, Communication and Creative Industries, a Chinese-foreign cooperative college approved by the Ministry of Education. It has also founded Chinese language teaching centers in Russia, Malaysia and other countries, and 2 Confucius Institutes in Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and Xavier University of Louisiana. Having cultivated more than 3000 doctors, masters, bachelors and short-term overseas students for over 90 countries and regions, HBU is a pilot university designated by Training and Research Center for Overseas Study of Ministry of Education, and the first one qualified to receive Chinese government scholarships in Hebei Province.
HBU has gone through the vicissitudes of more than 90 years since its establishment. In the course of its development, scholars and students from generation to generation have been striving with great efforts to make contributions for the country, thus forming the motto of “Seeking Truth from Facts, Studying Profoundly and Behaving Honestly” and the school spirit of “Erudition, Pursuit for truth, Endurance and Innovation ”. Taking this as its aspiration and values, HBU has educated more than 300 thousand excellent students with alumni spreading around the world, and created a multitude of original and cutting-edge achievements in scientific and technological filed, which brought great economic and social benefits. Currently, HBU is thriving with strong momentum, supported by Hebei Provincial Committee, the People’s Government of Hebei Province and national ministries including Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance. With the opportunity of being co-constructed by Hebei Province and Ministry of Education, all teachers and students are working together to overcome difficulties and striding ahead to build a high-level comprehensive university with distinctive characteristics and popularity in the whole world.
