Introduction to Hainan Tropical Ocean University

Hainan Tropical Ocean University (海南热带海洋学院, website) is a full-time public undergraduate provincial university jointly established by the Hainan Provincial People’s Government, the State Oceanic Administration, China National Offshore Oil Corporation, the Sanya Municipal People’s Government, and the Sansha Municipal People’s Government. It is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education. China-ASEAN Education and Training Center and one of the top ten “educational aid bases” of the Ministry of Education are the master’s degree-granting units approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. They are Chinese member universities of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization University and also a minority area in the south-central part of Hainan Province. A base for talent cultivation and knowledge innovation, social services, cultural heritage, international exchanges and cooperation.

Hainan Tropical Ocean University has two campuses, Sanya and Wuzhishan. The campus covers an area of more than 2,200 acres. The existing total construction area is 532,900 square meters. The total value of fixed assets was 104,238,900 yuan; the total value of teaching and research equipment was 19,112,240 yuan; the number of paper books in the collection was 1,534,000, and the number of electronic books was 1.537 million.

Hainan Tropical Ocean University has 18 secondary colleges, 3 master’s degree programs, 51 undergraduate majors and 5 specialist majors, covering literature, science, engineering, management, education, history, art, law, agronomy, etc. 9 university subjects. The school has 19 sea-related majors (directions) such as marine science, and has defined six major key disciplines and fields such as marine human history, marine tourism, marine management, marine food, marine information, marine biological ecology and environment. A disciplinary professional system featuring ocean, tourism, ethnicity and ecology was initially formed.

Hainan Tropical Ocean University has more than 1,200 faculty members, including more than 840 full-time teachers, more than 410 senior professional titles, more than 620 master’s degree teachers, and two academicians. Among the teachers, there are special experts from the State Council, experts in the province, first- and second-level candidates for the 515 talents, excellent teachers from the country, famous teachers at the provincial level, and double-teachers from industry enterprises and research institutes.

Hainan Tropical Ocean University has more than 18,200 full-time students, including more than 140 graduate students, 60 joint masters with China Ocean University, more than 15,200 undergraduates, more than 2,800 undergraduate students, and more than 110 international students.

Relying on the geographical advantages of Sanya International Tropical Coastal Tourism City, the university has continuously improved its international education level, and its international exchange and cooperation advantages have become increasingly prominent. The university has cooperated with 127 universities and educational institutions in 63 countries and regions in five continents. 145 cooperation agreements were signed, of which 87 were agreements with the “Belt and Road” countries and regions. More than 900 students have been sent to exchange volunteer. We have received 300 international students from 15 countries.

About Sanya

The city of Sanya, also called Lucheng, was officially established with the approval of the State Council on Jan 1, 2015. It is located on southern Hainan Island.
