Introduction to Hainan Medical University
Hainan Medical University (海南医学院, website) is the only one provincial public medical colleges Hainan, Hainan is located in Haikou City, the provincial capital, is the only one free trade zone located in the country’s medical institutions of higher learning. “Building a high-level medical university with distinctive tropical medical characteristics” is the development goal of the Hainan Medical College during the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” period determined by the Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government, and it is also the common vision of teachers and students throughout the school.
Hainan Medical University’s life carries the health dream of the Hainanese people, and its prosperity benefits from the establishment of the Hainan Provincial Special Administrative Region. The private Haiqiang Medical Technology (Vocational) School founded in 1947 and the private Hainan University School of Medicine established in 1948 are the predecessors of the college. The two schools were merged into the Hainan Medical College in 1951 (undergraduate education on a trial basis from 1977 to 1979). Renamed Hainan Medical College, merged into Hainan University to become the medical department of Hainan University in 1983, and formally established Hainan Medical College with the approval of the National Education Commission in 1993. In 2003, it was identified by the Ministry of Education as a joint master’s degree graduate unit. In 2013, it was approved as a master’s degree authorization unit. There are currently 12,827 full-time students, including 10 doctoral students, 647 graduate students, 9660 undergraduates, and 2510 college students. College vigorously promote the internationalization of education, for “all the way along,” along and African countries to recruit foreign students, 638 students from 33 countries.
Hainan Medical University adheres to the guiding ideology of running a school with quality improvement as its core, and strengthens the construction of teaching staff and teaching resources. At present, there are 1,095 full-time teachers, including 924 doctoral masters, accounting for 84.38%; 403 doctoral doctors, accounting for 36.80%; and 761 senior professional and technical positions, including 140 professors. There are 1 “Thousand Talents Plan” for overseas high-level talents, 5 “National Ten Million Talent Project”, 17 Special Posting Experts of the State Council, 1 National Excellent Teacher, 1 National Teaching Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine Colleges, and Provincial and Ministerial Levels Outstanding contribution experts 22 people, 6 provincial teaching teachers, 4 new century outstanding talents.
Hainan Medical University takes tropical medicine as its school’s characteristic, has a complete system of tropical medicine teaching, scientific research, and clinical practice, and has formed a stable tropical medical research direction. It has 2 national specialty programs, 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 national clinical teaching training demonstration center, 1 national excellent video public course, 1 national education informatization pilot undergraduate college project, and the Ministry of Education Excellence 5 doctor education programs, 1 pilot project of comprehensive reform of the Ministry of Education. There are 8 provincial-level specialty programs, 2 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 7 provincial-level teaching teams, 19 provincial-level excellent courses, and 6 provincial-level online open courses.
Hainan Medical University has two key laboratory construction sites of Ministry of Education for emergency and trauma research, tropical translational medicine, an out-of-hospital innovation unit of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, a Hainan Provincial Drug Safety Evaluation and Research Center that has obtained the national GLP certification, and 7 Level key laboratories, 3 provincial clinical research centers, 3 provincial engineering research centers, 6 academician workstations, and formed 11 provincial scientific research innovation teams. Hosted 6 medical journals, of which “Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine” and “Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine” are the only two international English-language international tropical medicine journals indexed by SCI in China, with impact factors of 1.772 and 1.587 Ranked 11th and 12th in the Global SCI Journal of Tropical Medicine. The discipline of clinical medicine is the first discipline in Hainan Province to enter the top 1% of ESI worldwide.
The university has 4 affiliated hospitals affiliated to the Hainan Hospital (Hainan Provincial People’s Hospital), the First and Second Affiliated Hospitals, and the Affiliated Cancer Hospital. The total number of emergency department visits is 4.36 million person-times, and 225,000 patients are discharged annually. There are 4 non-directly affiliated hospitals. It has 8 national key construction specialists, 2 Chinese medicine administration key clinical establishment specialists, 69 national residency training bases, and 2 national specialist physician training bases. It is the lead unit of the National Maritime Emergency Education Training Base and the National Emergency Medical Rescue Team (Hainan) project. It plays a leading role in the construction of major national special tasks such as the trauma treatment system covering the South China Sea region and the “National Maritime Emergency Medical Rescue Base”.
In the past five years, the university has undertaken 197 national scientific research projects with funding of 80.576 million yuan. A total of 43 provincial and ministerial awards were obtained, including 8 first prizes of Hainan Science and Technology Award, 1 second prize of Natural Science of the Ministry of Education, and 1 third prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award. 2 first prizes for teaching achievements in Hainan Province.
Hainan Medical University covers a total area of 1492.76 acres, of which the Chengxi Campus and Longhua Campus cover a total area of 606.21 acres. The Hainan Pharmaceutical Research and Development Science and Technology Park under construction covers an area of 50.08 acres and the newly-built Guilin Yang Campus covers an area of 836.47 acres. The library building covers an area of 33,000 square meters and has more than 1.04 million volumes of paper books. It has a modern electronic book system and a computer network service system.
