Introduction to Fujian Medical University

Fujian Medical University (FJMU), founded in 1937, is one of the earliest public undergraduate medical universities in China. The school is a “double first-class” construction university in Fujian Province with a comprehensive medical education system and a multidisciplinary coordinated development. It is a health training center, medical scientific research center, and medical service center in Fujian. According to the ranking of the “Best Medical University in China in 2019”, our university is ranked 17th in the country.

The university currently has 2 campuses, Shangjie and Taijiang with a planned area of about 1,500 acres. There are 21 colleges (departments) and 27 undergraduate majors, including 4 national-level specialty majors. At present, there are more than 11,400 teaching and medical staff (including affiliated hospitals) and more than 16,000 full-time students. It has carried out multi-level and multi-angle exchanges and cooperation with more than 120 universities and research institutions at home and abroad.

Fujian Medical University currently has 1,574 full-time teachers, of which 42.31% have doctoral degree teachers, 491 professors, and 578 associate professors. Students majoring in clinical medicine, stomatology, preventive medicine, and nursing have participated in the national qualification examination for practicing physicians (nurses) over the years, and their passing rates are among the best in the country. Students of clinical medicine majors participated in the National College of Higher Medical School Students’ Clinical Skills Competition and won the first prize of the East China Division for seven consecutive years, and repeatedly won the first, second, and third prizes in national competitions. Fujian Medical University currently has 6 first-level disciplines (including 43 in the directory or its own second-level disciplines) authorized by doctorates in clinical medicine, basic medicine, stomatology, public health and preventive medicine, pharmacy, and nursing. There are 2 authorized places for doctoral degrees such as stomatology, 8 first-level disciplines for master’s degrees, and 6 authorized places for master’s degrees. Fujian Medical University has 6 directly affiliated hospitals including Affiliated Union Hospital, First Affiliated Hospital, Second Affiliated Hospital, Third Affiliated Hospital, Affiliated Stomatological Hospital, and Affiliated Pingtan Xiehe Hospital. It owns 5 clinical medical schools, including Xiehe Clinical Medical College, First Clinical Medical College, Second Clinical Medical College, Provincial Clinical Medical College, and Fuzhou General Medical College. At the same time, in Fujian Province, there are 15 non-directly affiliated hospitals such as Provincial Hospital, 900th Hospital of Joint Logistics Support Force, Zhangzhou Hospital, 23 clinical teaching hospitals, and 94 professional practice teaching bases. The Second Affiliated Hospital is the leading hospital in the Southern Regional Medical Center of Fujian Province. School of Foreign Languages

The School of Foreign Languages consists of the Department of English, the Department of Public Foreign Languages, the Department of Medical English, and the Center for Language Teaching and Experiment. It is responsible for cultivating undergraduate students majoring in English and undertaking public foreign languages for non-English majors, undergraduates and adult education students. There are 43 full-time teachers, 1 professor and 10 associate professors. Many teachers graduated from well-known universities at home and abroad. The college also employs 2-3 foreign language experts. In the past three years, six teachers have won great achievements in various teaching skill competitions at the provincial and school levels. The College continues to strengthen discipline construction and condense research directions, covering linguistics, applied linguistics, intercultural communication, and English and American literature research, especially medical English teaching and research. At present, the college is the executive director unit of the Fujian Provincial Translation Association and the Fujian Provincial Foreign Languages Society.

The College has a four-year undergraduate major in English. In 2007, it was approved by the Ministry of Education. In the autumn of 2008, students began to enroll, with 60 enrolled students each year, and currently 260 students.
