Introduction to China Pharmaceutical University

China Pharmaceutical University (CPU, website), situated in the historical and cultural city of Nanjing, is one of the “211 project” key universities affiliated to the Ministry of Education of China. It has been known for its long history and its leadership role in China’s pharmaceutical academic field. The University was founded in 1936 as China’s first independent four-year National College of Pharmacy and the first public institution for higher pharmaceutical education in China.

By the end of Year 2015, China Pharmaceutical University hosts more than 15000 full-time students, in which about 12000 are bachelor’s or associate degree candidates, over 3600 are postgraduates. Its faculty includes 910 full-time teachers. There are 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of German Academy of Sciences, 4 supported by National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, 6 “Yangtze River Scholars”, 2 supported by “Thousand Talents Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 supported by “Ten-Thousand Talents Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The University is composed of two campuses, namely the Xuanwumen Campus and the Jiangning Campus, which cover a total area of about 2200 mu (146.6 hectares).

China Pharmaceutical University provides a wide variety of disciplines including Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, Economics, Management, Arts and Law. The first-level discipline of Pharmacy was enlisted as National Key Discipline. In 2015’s ESI statistics, our pharmacology and toxicology, chemistry, as well as clinical pharmacy programs ranked the world’s top 1%. The publications in pharmacology and toxicology ranked top of the nation. China Pharmaceutical University offers 25 bachelor’s degree programs, 5 associate (polytechnic) programs, 24 research-oriented doctoral degree programs under the two first-level disciplines of Pharmacy and Traditional Chinese Pharmacy, 36 research-oriented master’s degree programs under 5 first-level disciplines, 23 disciplines open to post-doctoral research scholars under the two first-level disciplines of Pharmacy and Traditional Chinese Pharmacy, as well as 5 professional degree programs at the master’s level.

China Pharmaceutical University adheres to the concept of academic first, teacher and student oriented, win-win concept, implements the educational model of integrating knowledge, ability and quality, highlights cultivation of students’ creative thinking, and is committed to creating future pharmacy elites. China Pharmaceutical University is the only one that has won First Prize of National Teaching Achievements for consecutively three times. In the Year 2014, China Pharmaceutical University recommended three projects for Teaching Achievement Award at national level, all of which won the second prize, excluding any other pharmaceutical education institution. Graduate employment rate has always ranked top among MOE-affiliated universities and local colleges in Jiangsu Province. In the Year 2014, the undergraduate employment rate ranked top 1 among universities directly subordinated to the Ministry of Education.

The China Pharmaceutical University promotes innovation in research and aims to develop novel medicines for public health. It has founded 18 key labs including The State Key Laboratory of Natural Medicines and key labs at provincial or ministerial levels, engineering technical centers, innovative platforms. The university has established academic collaboration with overseas universities and institutions in over 40 countries and regions. During 2011-2015 the university has undertaken 26 major projects for the nation’s Innovative New Drug projects and was endowed with 178 million Yuan funding, being No.1 among all universities nationwide. Our researchers won two 2nd Prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award. 2 new drugs were national certified and 6 new drugs were approved for clinical research, and 410 patents were attained and 3919 SCI-indexed articles were published.

About Nanjing

Nanjing (Panorama), capital of Jiangsu province in eastern China. It is a port on the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang) and a major industrial and communications center. Rich in history, it served seven times as the capital of regional empires, twice as the seat of revolutionary government. Nanjing is the second largest city in the East China region, only after Shanghai. It is recognized as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. The inner area of Nanjing enclosed by the city wall is Nanjing City, while the Nanjing Metropolitan Region includes surrounding cities and areas, covering over 60,000 km, with a population of over 30 million.

Food

Traditional Nanjing cuisine is known as Jin Su cuisine and is notable for the emphasis placed on original flavor and carefully selected raw ingredients. Nanjing dishes are traditionally bright in color and use only a moderate amount of seasoning but a significant amount of oil. Many of the city’s local favorite dishes are based on ducks, including Nanjing salted duck, duck blood and vermicelli soup, and duck oil pancake.

Weather

Nanjing’s four seasons are clearly distinguishable and has plenty of rainfall to keep it green. The hot summer months are from July to September. Winter lasts from December until March. Spring and autumn are both mild and pleasant. January and July mean temperatures are about 37 °F (3 °C) and 82 °F (28 °C), respectively. The average annual rainfall is about 40 inches (1,000 mm), the bulk of it falling between June and August.
