About Changzhou University
Changzhou University (常州大学，website) is located in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, a historical and cultural city in the south of the Yangtze River with a prosperous economy and a wealth of humanities, and is a full-time provincial undergraduate institution jointly established by the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province, China National Petroleum Corporation, China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation and China National Offshore Oil Corporation. In 2020, the university became a university jointly built by the Department of Education and Changzhou Municipal People’s Government.
Founded in 1978, formerly known as Wuxi Branch and Changzhou Branch of Nanjing Institute of Chemical Technology, the university was named Jiangsu Institute of Chemical Technology in 1981 with the approval of the State Council; in 1992, it became an institution under the management of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation and was renamed Jiangsu Institute of Petrochemical Technology; in 2002, it was renamed Jiangsu Institute of Technology; and in 2010, it was renamed Changzhou University. After 43 years of development, Changzhou University has built a complete bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree training system, as well as a multi-level scientific research and social service system. 2020, the university was ranked 129th in China by Soft Science.
With “responsibility” as the school motto, the university adheres to the school spirit of “responsibility and excellence” and the school philosophy of “people-oriented, education-based, open schooling and collaborative development”. We actively cultivate senior applied talents with innovation spirit, responsibility consciousness, professionalism, collaboration quality and international vision to meet the needs of social development.
The school has complete infrastructure and excellent running conditions. There are two campuses in Science Education City and West Taihu Lake, covering an area of more than 2,000 mu, and the total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment is over 500 million yuan. The university has 21 colleges, with nearly 20,000 full-time undergraduate students and more than 3,200 doctoral and master’s degree students. There is also a College of Continuing Education (Li Gongpu College of Social Education) and Huide College of Changzhou University (an independent college).
The university has a complete range of disciplines with distinctive features, covering ten disciplines, including engineering, science, management, economics, literature, law, art, medicine, agriculture, education, etc. In 2012, the university was approved to serve the national special needs of doctoral personnel training program, and became a doctoral degree granting unit in 2018. There are one authorized doctoral degree program, 13 authorized master’s degree programs and seven professional degree programs. There are 2 provincial advantageous disciplines, 7 provincial “13th Five-Year Plan” key disciplines, and 3 disciplines of chemistry, material science and engineering are in the top 1% of global ESI discipline ranking. In the 2020 Soft Science China Best Disciplines Ranking, eight disciplines, including chemistry, materials science and engineering, power engineering and engineering thermophysics, computer science and technology, chemical engineering and technology, safety science and engineering, law, and business administration, are on the list.
The university has a sound talent training system and the quality of training is constantly improving. There are 80 undergraduate majors, including 3 national specialties, 12 national first-class majors, 2 pilot projects of comprehensive reform of the Ministry of Education, 8 majors certified by China Engineering Education; 13 national first-class courses, 1 national high-quality textbook, 9 planning textbooks; 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 national virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 2 national virtual simulation There are 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 national virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 2 national virtual simulation experimental teaching programs, 1 national off-campus practical education base for college students, and 2 first-class and 1 second-class awards for national teaching achievements in higher education. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the university won 2 Grand Prizes, 3 First Prizes, 5 Second Prizes and 6 Third Prizes in the Challenge Cup National Student Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, and won the “Winning Cup” in 2017; it won the Gold Prize in the Challenge Cup National Student Entrepreneurial Plan Competition for the fourth consecutive time, and won the “Winning Cup” in 2020. The university won one gold medal, three silver medals and five bronze medals in the “Internet +” Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. The university ranked 91st and 44th in the “National Competition Ranking of Undergraduates in General Universities (Undergraduate)” and “National Competition Ranking of Undergraduates in Local Universities” from 2015 to 2020.
The university has a reasonable structure of faculty and excellent quality of teachers. There are more than 2,000 faculty members, with more than 670 full-time teachers holding senior professional and technical positions, and the proportion of teachers with doctoral degrees is over 60%. The university highlights independent innovation and implements effective scientific research in a comprehensive manner. “Since the 13th Five-Year Plan, the university has won 1 National Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress, 1 National Second Prize for Technical Invention, 1 Chinese Silver Patent Award, 1 National Second Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Social Science, 97 provincial and ministerial level and industry scientific research awards; 274 national scientific and technological projects, including 17 major and key projects; and 1 national scientific research project. More than 3,400 academic papers have been included in SCI, EI, CPCI, CSSCI, etc., and more than 1,700 invention patents have been authorized. The university has 1 national local joint engineering research center, 1 national key laboratory (cultivation point), 12 provincial key laboratories, 2 provincial collaborative innovation centers, 7 provincial humanities and social science research bases, and 1 provincial university science and technology park incubator. The university has established comprehensive cooperation with more than 50 large petroleum and petrochemical enterprises and more than 50 governments at the county and district levels, and has built 22 provincial engineering and technology centers, 43 university-enterprise joint research and development centers, 487 university-industry research bases and 432 university-enterprise alliances with enterprises. 2016, the university won the “China Industry-University-Research Cooperation Innovation Award In 2016, the university won the “China Industry-University-Research Cooperation Innovation Award”.
The university adheres to open schooling and continuously promotes educational exchanges and cooperation. It has the qualification of enrolling overseas Chinese, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan students and foreign students, and has successfully passed the quality certification of national colleges and universities to study in China, and is the Chinese language education base of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, with nearly 800 foreign students from more than 40 countries studying in the university. In recent years, the university has been actively promoting the strategy of international talent cultivation with the focus on inter-university cooperation, academic exchange and scientific research cooperation, and has established close cooperation with more than 50 universities in 36 countries and regions. Five Sino-foreign cooperation projects were held with Maynooth University in Ireland, St. Xavier University in Canada and New Jersey City University in the U.S. The university was approved as one of the high-level demonstration construction projects of Sino-foreign cooperation in provincial universities. The university has established the first Confucius Institute in Venezuela with Bolivar University and hosted Confucius Classes in Andalusia, Spain. The university has built a think tank platform such as the Institute of Intercultural Studies, the Center for Thai Cultural Studies, the Center for Latin American Studies, the Center for Israeli Cultural Studies, and the Institute for the Overseas Diffusion of Chinese Culture.
