Introduction to Anhui Normal University
Anhui Normal University (AHNU 安徽师范大学, website) is the earliest institution of higher education in Anhui Province, located in Wuhu, a national open city with the reputation of “Anhui style and charm, the city of a thousand lakes”, bordering the vast Yangtze River and the beautiful Zhe Mountain, integrating the natural beauty of Jiangnan and the humanities of Anhui. It is a university jointly built by the People’s Government of Anhui Province and the Ministry of Education, a university under the national project of “Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in Central and Western China”, a provincial key comprehensive university under the priority construction of the Anhui Provincial Government and a key university under the construction of Anhui High-level University with Special Features, and has been selected as a pilot unit of the Ministry-University Journalism College, a national key Marxism College, and the second “National Civilization College”. The university has been selected as the pilot unit of journalism school jointly built by the ministry and university, national key Marxist college, and won the title of “National Civilized Campus”.
The predecessor of the university is Anhui Provincial University, which was founded in 1928 in Anqing City, renamed as National Anhui University in 1946, and moved to Wuhu in December 1949. In 1972, it was officially named Anhui Normal University (inscribed by Comrade Guo Moruo) with the approval of the State Council, and in 2005, Wuhu Normal College was merged into Anhui Normal University.
During the course of more than 90 years, a large number of famous experts and scholars and social figures, such as Liu Wendian, Zhou Jianren, Yu Dafu, Su Xuelin, Chen Wangdao, Zhu Xiang, Zhu Guangqian, Wang Xingkong, Yang Liangkong, Cheng Yansheng, Tao Yin, Zhang Weizi, Ding Xuxian, Xiang Nan and Xu Jie, have gathered at the shore of Lake Ling and Mirror Lake to write books and teach. Generations of teachers and scholars have worked hard, practiced, nurtured future students, passed on the message, and sharpened the spirit of “heavy and simple, good and far-reaching, the pursuit of excellence, self-improvement”, and accumulated the teaching style of “rigorous learning, dedication, teaching and educating, and being a teacher”. “It has cultivated the teaching style of “diligent learning, prudent thinking, simplicity and humility, unity of knowledge and action, and seeking truth and innovation”, and refined the school motto of “strong virtue, important teaching, erudition, and sincere action”. Since its establishment, the university has trained nearly 300,000 full-time professionals for the country.

AHNU’s disciplines cover literature, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, education, science, engineering, agriculture, art, etc. It has formed a complete talent training system with different levels of doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s education, and different types of full-time higher education, adult higher education and international student education. There are 18 provincial key disciplines, 3 provincial major discipline construction projects, 6 selected for Anhui peak discipline construction program, 1 Anhui world-class discipline award fund project and 3 domestic first-class discipline award fund projects. There are 6 post-doctoral stations, 8 primary disciplines authorized for doctoral degree, 1 secondary discipline authorized for doctoral degree (not including primary discipline coverage), 30 primary disciplines authorized for master’s degree, 15 professional degree authorized points for master’s degree, and 88 undergraduate majors.

There are more than 2460 teaching staffs at AHNU, including more than 1690 full-time teachers, more than 1020 professors, associate professors and other senior titles. There are one “Changjiang”, one “Jieqing”, one cultural master and “Four Batches” of talents, one leader in philosophy and social science, one national high-level talent special support program 1 leader in science and technology innovation, 3 national candidates of “Hundred Million Talents Project”, 6 “New Century Excellent Talents” support program of the Ministry of Education, 2 recipients of National Excellent Youth Fund, 40 provincial academic and technical leaders, and 75 reserve candidates of provincial academic and technical leaders. There are more than 400 teachers with the title (honor) above the provincial level. There are more than 47,900 students enrolled in various categories, including more than 24,600 general undergraduates, more than 6,100 postgraduates, more than 280 international students, and more than 17,000 adult education students.
AHNU campus covers a total area of 2,024,300 square meters, with a construction area of 1,063,800 square meters and a total value of 478 million yuan for teaching and research instruments and equipment. The university library is a national key protection unit for ancient books, with a rich and complete collection of books, 3,011,100 paper books, 2,121,000 electronic books, 68,000 electronic journals, 104 digital resources, more than 190,000 ancient books, and more than 700 kinds of good ancient books, among which the Hongwu Zhengyun is the only one in China that does not match or supplement the full text, the Yuan engraved and Ming recursive “Tongzhi”, the Ming Jiajing engraved copy of The collection is basically digitalized. AHNU is one of the first colleges and universities in China that are allowed to recruit publicly funded students, and it is also the national base for Chinese language education and the center for international promotion of Chinese language in Anhui Province. The university has received more than 5,000 international students from more than 30 countries (regions) for long- and short-term study and academic education, and has established long-term friendly cooperation and academic exchanges with dozens of institutions of higher education, research institutions and academic groups in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Japan, Vietnam and other countries (regions), and has established a Confucius Institute with Charles Darwin University in Australia.
