Hohai University, in 1924, merged with Southeast University to establish Hehai University of Technology. In 1927, it was merged into the fourth Zhongshan University, and later renamed as Central University and Nanjing University. In 1952, the Department of Water Resources of Nanjing University, the Department of Water Resources of Jiaotong University, Tongji University, Zhejiang University, and the East China Water Conservancy College formed the East China Water Conservancy College. Qian Zhengying was the first dean. In 1960, the school was recognized as a national key university by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. In 1985, the traditional school name “Hehai University” was resumed. Comrade Deng Xiaoping personally wrote the name of the school.
