2024 International Cultural Festival of Taizhou University
On the afternoon of 30th May, the first International Cultural Festival of Taizhou University was grandly opened in Zhishen Square of Jiaojiang Campus. More than 140 foreign teachers and students from nearly 30 countries and regions, including Russia, Belarus, Morocco, Equatorial Guinea, India, etc., presented a colourful multi-cultural feast together with the Taizhou special exhibition area.
This year’s International Cultural Festival, with the theme of “One Belt, One Flourish, One Road, One Song, Aggregating the New Power of Civilisation”, aims to show international students the cultural characteristics of their own countries through music, dance, food, traditional costumes and other colourful activities, to help students to increase their understanding of and respect for the world’s multiculturalism, to enrich the multiculturalism of the campus, and to promote exchanges and mutual understanding of civilisation between China and foreign countries. The event was attended by international students from different countries who brought their own cultural characteristics to the event.
On the scene of the activity, international students from different countries brought special cultural performances, such as the energetic Razig dance, the fast-paced African dance, the touching Spanish poetry recitation and other 20 programmes, which made the audience appreciate the unique charm of different cultures. The “Thousand Characters Martial Arts Exercise” performed by students from the Affiliated School of Taizhou University and the “Mengwa National Style Runway Show” performed by children from Xinhu Kindergarten not only demonstrated traditional Chinese culture, but also “adorably” turned over the whole audience, pushing the atmosphere of the scene to a climax.
Walking between the various booths, students from Equatorial Guinea enthusiastically invited guests to dance together with very African characteristics of the national dance, the site music bursts, singing and dancing, showing the enthusiasm of the African exuberance; Iranian students with colourful paints in the card hand-painted the name of the guests, so that everyone can get the Persian version of the name card; Moroccan students brought their traditional customs! –Haina tattoo, creating a gorgeous and exquisite hand painting, eye-catching; Belarusian students poured a glass of Gervais drink for everyone, a sip, as if they were in the local area, and they also used paints to colour the Russian nesting dolls with the guests, feeling the rich culture and symbolism… …Mongolia’s big meat skewers, Uzbekistan’s rice and other specialties greatly satisfied everyone’s taste buds, attracting “diners” full of praise. A wide range of handicrafts and special foods from different countries, as well as snacks from Taizhou, highlighted different ethnic customs and cultural connotations, attracting people to listen and experience.
“Most of these small flower hats of our nation are hard-shelled, brimless, round or four-pronged, and those with corners can be folded, and the flower hats worn on New Year’s Day will be more grand. ……” Ai Wei, a student from Uzbekistan, enthusiastically introduced to the reporter the traditional dress and cultural customs of their country. Aiwei has been studying tourism management in Taizhou University for five years and is very fluent in Chinese. He thinks that Taizhou is a city with rich tourism resources, and it is very comfortable to live in Jiaojiang. “It’s time to graduate, the ticket to go back home has been bought.” Although it has been five years since he went home, Aiwei is still a little reluctant to leave Taizhou in his heart.
This International Cultural Festival is not only a cultural feast, but also a spiritual exchange. It provides a platform for Chinese and foreign students to cross borders and gain a deeper understanding of other countries’ cultures, encourages them to take the initiative to participate in and comprehensively develop cross-cultural competence, to appreciate exotic flavours and international cultures, and to lay a solid international foundation for the future.
