The College of Foreign Languages of Jianghan University started its talent training work in 1963 and undergraduate education in 1977. The college now has 4 teaching departments (departments), namely, English Department, French Department, Japanese Department and University English Department, and operates 3 undergraduate majors, namely, English, French and Japanese, and has 2 master’s degree authorization points, namely, Master of Translation (English Translation) and Master of Education (Teaching English as a Discipline); Foreign Languages and Literature is a key discipline of Wuhan Municipal Government, and the major of English is the national first-class undergraduate major construction point, while the major of French is the first-class undergraduate major construction point of Hubei Province. English major is a national first-class undergraduate major construction point, and French major is a first-class undergraduate major construction point in Hubei Province. The College is responsible for the teaching of public foreign language courses for undergraduates and postgraduates.
The College has 111 teaching staff, 94 full-time teachers, including 45 teachers with senior titles, 76 teachers with master’s degrees or above (including 22 with doctoral degrees), 13 master’s degree supervisors, and more than 20 long-term foreign teachers. The English Translation Teaching and Research Department has been awarded as “Outstanding Basic Teaching Organisation of Hubei Universities” and the English Translation Teaching Team has been awarded as “Provincial Teaching Team of Hubei Universities”.
In recent years, dozens of teachers have won awards in national teaching competitions, and two teachers have been awarded the title of young and middle-aged translators in the central and western regions. Teachers of the college have undertaken more than 70 vertical projects of various kinds, such as the National Social Science Fund, the Humanities and Social Science Fund of the Ministry of Education, and the Social Science Fund of Hubei Province, etc. They have published more than 80 academic monographs, textbooks and translations, and more than 600 academic papers of various kinds in the past five years.
There are more than 800 undergraduates and 40 postgraduates of Master of Education (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) in the college, and the college will start to recruit postgraduates of Master of Translation in 2023. The teaching facilities of the college are complete and advanced, and the Language Learning Centre is the “Demonstration Centre for English Language Learning in Higher Educational Institutions in Hubei Province”, with 34 language laboratories for various kinds of teaching or practical training, including 10 professional language laboratories, 1 English Independent Learning Centre (with a total of 3 independent learning rooms), 2 multimedia network language rooms, 1 voice chat room, 1 situational language room, and 2 language rooms with a total of 3 independent learning rooms. In recent years, the college has actively organised and carried out subject and skill competitions, and many batches of students have won prizes in national and provincial foreign language speech, writing and translation competitions; the one-time passing rate of Grade 4 and 8 examinations for English, French and Japanese majors is much higher than the national average. The college attaches importance to foreign exchanges and cooperation, and has established good exchange and cooperation relations with many universities in France, Japan, Britain and the United States, and implemented foreign exchange programmes such as “3+1” and “1.5+1+1.5”, with dozens of students going abroad for further study year after year. 江汉大学外国语学院1963年开始人才培养工作，1977年开始本科教育。学院现设英语系、法语系、日语系和大学英语部共4个教学系（部），开办英语、法语、日语3个本科专业，拥有翻译硕士（英语笔译）和教育硕士（学科教学英语）2个硕士专业学位授权点；外国语言文学为武汉市级重点学科，英语专业是国家一流本科专业建设点，法语专业是湖北省一流本科专业建设点。学院承担全校本科生和研究生公共外语课程教学。
学院现有教职工111人，专任教师94人，其中高级职称教师45人；硕士以上学位76人（其中博士学位22人），硕士生导师 13名；长期聘用外籍教师20余人。英语翻译教研室获评“湖北省普通高校优秀基层教学组织”，英语翻译教学团队获评“湖北高校省级教学团队”。近年来，数十名教师在全国教学比赛中获奖，2名教师获中西部中青年翻译家称号。学院教师先后承担国家社科基金、教育部人文社科基金、湖北省社科基金等各类纵向课题70多项，出版各类学术专著、教材、译著等80多部，近5年发表各类学术论文600余篇。
学院现有在校本科学生800余人，教育硕士（学科教学英语）研究生40余人，2023年开始招收翻译硕士研究生。 学院教学设施齐备先进，语言学习中心为“湖北省高等学校英语语言学习示范中心”，拥有各类教学或实训的语言实验室共34间，其中专业语言实验室10间、英语自主学习中心1个（共3间自主学习室）、多媒体网络语言室2间、语音聊天室1间、情景语言室11间、同声传译室2间、全自动录播室2间、人机共译实验室1间、影视观摩厅1间和录音工作室1间；配备有英语、法语、日语数字卫星直录播系统、校园网络语言学科平台、同声传译系统、笔译机器辅助翻译系统、翻译云共享系统、翻译引擎、本地化工具、教学与语料管理系统等教学实训平台。 学院以“宽口径、重应用、国际型”人才培养为目标，不断优化人才培养模式，大力实施教学改革，注重培养学生的创新精神和实践能力。
近年来，学院积极组织开展学科及技能竞赛，有多批次学生在全国和省级大学外语演讲、写作和翻译等比赛中屡获大奖；英语、法语、日语专业的专业四级、八级考试一次性通过率均大大高于全国平均水平。 学院重视对外交流合作，先后与法国、日本、英国和美国等国家的多所大学建立了良好的交流合作关系，实施了“3+1”、“1.5+1+1.5”等对外交流项目，常年有数十名学生出国留学深造。
